Just trying to figure out ways to drive the cost of materials down, and it occoured to me that I have seen group buys on all sorts of stuff, but hadn't noticed any for lumber. Anyone done that? Had any decent luck with it?
Has anyone tried a group buy on lumber?

i think the Houston Woodworkers Club tried that in the past.
Because the stuff is so heavy, you need to have the organizer hold local pickup, or the original seller would have to be willing to ship individually or the organizer would have to reship which would eat into the costs as I find shipping costs = cost of wood for the most part.

Maybe if bt3 required a city/state from everyone, we would at least know if it's possible to do something like that (if there are enough people relatively local).
I know a lot of people don't show this, but I don't think it's for any particular reason, maybe just an oversight?
Texas is a big state, but it seems as if there are a mess of you guys out that way, could be feasible for some of you perhaps?
i would certainly look favorably upon something like that. You don't need a parachute to skydive, you only need a parachute to skydive twice.Comment

A group buy from a mill would probably only work for a group in decent traveling distance. You start shipping and the bulk rate savings get eaten up quickly.
I have seen several folks go in on a good craigslist deal, but it's been a while though.ErikComment

Anyone in Houston metro area interested in trying to put something like this together? I am wanting Walnut and Pecan to work with, and am trying to drive my costs down...Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. Please check out and subscribe to my Workshop Blog.Comment

There are guys on the Woodnet forum that have periodic runs where they bring wood from the east coast to Texas. I haven't tried any of them because I'm a little off the beaten track but they go to DFW pretty regularly. There is also a sawmill in Huntsville that might be good to check out.

I think you are talking about M&G up in Huntsville... Yeah, that one is on my radar, but I just hate dragging my truck from Galveston County, all the way up to Huntsville just for 50 bd / ft or so of lumber... Almost wish I could fit it in my Saturn...There are guys on the Woodnet forum that have periodic runs where they bring wood from the east coast to Texas. FWIW, at least for now, I am focusing in Clarks in Houston. I have heard good things about them from a couple of non forum colleagues that have been doing some business with them. Walnut at reasonable-ish rates, more oak than you can shake several sticks at, but no Pecan, at least that's the reports...Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. I have heard that Brazos Forrest Products gives you a break on price if it is over 100bf or so. I have a brother that lives in South Texas and he found out that he could have his order added to the same truck that delivered to a location where he lived and it would have cost him less than $20. Better for him than a 275 mile round trip to Austin.
