    Is it just me ?

Or do others think we should change the speed limit signs to speed suggestion ?
Apparently the wording does nothing to keep everyone from going as fast as they want, so why not just "suggest" that a certain speed is considered safe? After all, in a country that doesn't want mistakes marked with red ink on school papers, maybe telling drivers what their "limit" is is also offensive.

Not a fan of this idea... The "Limit" wording may not stop somebody from exceeding it, but it puts the teeth in the laws to punish those who do. "Suggestion" would be hard-pressed to be enforceable in court.

I don't have a problem with people going over on expressways with little traffic.

But I live on a (busy) street that is supposed to be limited to 25-MPH.

When my wife returns from driving a kid to school in the morning (for example), and slows to enter the driveway, people in a hurry to work will often try to pass her on the right (sometimes they do it successfully!).

Just a couple of weeks ago they installed those permanent signs that use radar to show the speed you're driving. I haven't been outside enough to notice if it is helping.

But I have a feeling the signs are the first part of a salvo of stepped-up enforcement.

I wouldn't mind if they'd go after those guys trying to pass on the right. At least every few months she has to stop and allow someone to pass on the right.

She can't get any more right and make the turn. The street is narrow because of the boulevard. And the driveways are narrow because of the small lot sizes.

I always set my cruise to the speed limit. 90% of my driving is on company business and they don't pay my speeding tickets. The only time I go over (other than inattention to changing speed limits) is when I'm trying to pass a semi on a four lane or any vehicle when I'm passing on a two lane.

Many drivers drive whatever speed they want to, then get mad at you for obeying the law. I do get irritated sometimes with someone doing quite a bit less than the speed limit, but as long as they are in the right lane they're doing nothing wrong.

I get very irritated with goombahs that pass me doing 80 on the interstate, only to slam on their brakes to 65 when they see a trooper on the side of the road.

Passing on the right is illegal but...
Maybe signalling a right turn will give those guys an additional hint....
Not sure if your wife does this and there sure are a lot who don't.

Montana speed control is somewhat as you say and the police can and do use discretion in giving tickets. If someone is obstructing traffic they can ticket them if the traffic is doing 80 and they are doing 50. Also on a foggy road they can ticket someone for doing 60 when they can't see. If i remember right they do have a night speed limit of 60??. is someone here from Montana that can say better as my experience is only 2 or 3 times a year.

Well, if they changed it to suggested, they wouldn't be able to set up speed traps at the end of the month to make their ticker quota.

Up here, if you go more than 50 km/h ( about 30 mph) over the speed limit-and get caught- you can be charged with street racing. Then you get a lift to the closest phone so you can call a cab and the police call the tow truck and impound your car.

If we got rid of speed limits the various governments would lose a revenue stream. So eliminating them is not going to happen.

I don't understand how folks who drive as slow as some do ever get anything done. Seems to me they spend all their time in the car.

My wife and I live on a boulevard, which is also a bus route, with a posted speed of 25 mph with one traffic lane and parking on each side of the boulevard. The section of our street is on a hill, so people must think they need to go 10 to 15 over the posted limit to make it up. The buses, and most police cars, also go well over the speed limit. This includes the vehicles going downhill, even in the winter when it's icy. One driver even managed to flip their car and land upside down across the street from our house. My wife, too, has people passing her on the right as she's maneuvering to get into the driveway. Our driveway is 9 feet wide, so we need to swing out to the left to get into the driveway, and we both signal 3 to 4 houses back to let people know our intentions. Enforcement of the speed limit would be a good deterrent. Anyone been to Rosendale?

Near where I worked was a parkway with several schools marked at 30 MPH which most people ignored. At least until one resident put on an orange safety vest and stood behind a tree with a blow dryer. She'd pop out and point the dryer at speeding cars. A lot of rubber left on the road.
