I agree that CF is funny. I like Conan because he is funny, but I do realize he skews to a younger crowd.

When they were doing the Carson tributes, I remember Leno saying there will never be another like Johnny (or along those lines).

I can't say how I responded. While there are times for guttural humor, I miss watching some of the entertainment I grew up with. People like Johnny, Bob Hope, etc.
Conan, well, I've been waiting for him to quit playing with his hair and grow up. Letterman, seems like college humor from a person with an attitude. Leno, tends to be the one I like the best, namely headlines. Jaywalking is both humorous and scary at the same time (remember the old phrase, these are our future leaders?).

They pulled Leno from his current spot (only watched a couple of times), I would like to see how reruns of the tonight show would do in that spot. There are a lot more channels, and fewer people get the time to grow on someone, now it is either a hit or not.

On the other hand, Leno is a car guy, and I wish he would reconsider, the option of doing an American Top Gear show. That would seem a natural fit to me.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Looks like Conan may not go along with NBC's plans to move Leno back to late night:

An associated article to that story says Fox is very interested in signing Conan to do a show. Personally, I think NBC is dumb for letting him go. I think he is more entertaining than Jay or David Letterman and he attracts a younger crowd who will be around to watch him longer. Maybe NBC really wants Jay in the 11:30 slot again and this is their way of doing it without having to pay Conan a lot of money.

There are some serious contractual issues to be resolved, since NBC is not releasing Conan from his TS contract, just moving it to a later timeslot. Lots of grist for the lawyers in Tinseltown to grind.

Looks like in this case NBC has managed to p*** off just about everyone involved in this fiasco, in particular the 3 late-night comics that have made millions and millions for them. I guess Letterman was right that they were pretty stupid...

Conan is so irritating and pathetic that he better be careful what he says... Either that, or start brushing up on his "Welcome to WalMart..." spiel.

Leno will most likely do quite well once he is back on at 10:30pm. I watched his show frequently at that time slot but only a couple of times at 9pm.

It is safe to assume that if all of these talk shows were taken off the TV none of them, Leno or Letterman, would go hungry or have to get another job.

The fact that Leno wouldn't retire and just disappear like Carson has certainly complicated their plans.

In his defense, it's much easier to plan to retire 10 years in advance than it is to actually do it when the time comes. Some people are defined by their work, and I think Leno may be like that. It's certainly not about the $$$.

I agree that he is probably a workaholic. But how much does he spend on cars/bikes? Probably can't afford to retire and keep dropping six and seven figures on petrol burners. And if he isn't doing Tonight, will people still pay for tickets to see him in LV?

Show either Leno or Conan the door, and they will likely bolt to Fox.

I think it is 60/40 likely they're going to let Leno go and risk him going to another network.

The fact is that Leno's demographic skews old, and advertisers want young (which is dumb but it is true).

Conan is pissed. He is raking NBC over the coals in his monologue.

The younger folk tend to favor newer gadgets than us older folk. New product new market segment means need an attraction for said market segment Conan fits that bill. In some of the other online comment forums I have visited the 18-35ers are favoring Conan O'Brian over Jay Leno by a margin of well over 20-1.

NBC has sort of been cursed and blessed at this position ever since Carson.

First they had to decide between letterman and Leno when the king retired - they picked Leno and Dave bolted.
Now they had to choose between Leno and Conan - looks like they picked Leno again but they're going to lose Conan as a result.

Right, the problem for Leno (and why I suspect NBC may ultimately pick Conan and say goodbye to Leno) is that advertisers, and therefor the network, want to appeal to a younger audience because they spend a higher percentage of their income and are early adopters of new products/technology.

It doesn't help Leno's case that his ratings dropped like cannonballs when he switched time slots. It kind of proved the case that his ratings for the Tonight slot were largely due to the real estate he was occupying.

Yes, Conan's ratings were lower than Leno's for the same slot. BUT, it would be interesting to see ratings broken down into demographics for the two. I suspect Conan was doing as well as or beating Leno in the key younger viewers.

That explains why I like Leno better. I'm outside the target demographic...I'm 36.
