All. I have seen several members of this group from the greater Houston area. I usually buy my lumber from Clarks in the Heights - does any have any other recommendations - I am looking to buy Mahogany. If all else fails, go to clarks. I just thought I may check out another lumber yard.

Never heard of Clarks.... And I've never worked with Mahogany. But for Walnut I have been getting it at M&G in Huntsville when I buy in quantity, for small runs of stuff when I am in a hurry, I usually just grab a few board feet at Woodcraft on Beltway @ 59 since the difference in price isn't worth the gas and time to get to Huntsville. Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. I actually just entered all the pieces into rockler and it seems like they will be the cheapest and with free delivery and they cut all the boards to length. I still like clarks - it is pretty fun to go and browse around although it can be a bit overwhelming. Thanks for the input.Comment

I'm south of the Houston area and looking for cedar to build these simple raised planter beds: http://www.lowescreativeideas.com/id..._Bed_0409.aspx
Lowes and Home Depot online do not show 2 x 4 and 4 x 4 cedar available in local stores. Any advice on where to go to get the type of cedar I need for this project? Thank you.RitaComment

Give them a call, the online store listing does not show everything. When you call be sure to ask about the quality and if surfaced etc. and the price so you can comparison shop. If they are reluctant to give a price on the phone tell they you need to know so you bring enough money.

i have bought small amounts of lumber from both Houston Hardwoods and Clarks lumber and spent a couple of hours going around their stacks.
I will tell you that Clarks has 10 times as much stuff.
I'd go to Clarks first. The only bad thing about both places is limited Saturday morning hours. And weekday hours that my work schedule makes impossible to visit them.
Here's some pics i took last time i was there (clarks) - the shelves are all labeled and clearly identified. The stacks of unlabeled stuff appears to be new incoming stock that impressed me by its volume :Last edited by LCHIEN; 01-01-2010, 05:33 PM.
