i have really grown to dislike sears over the last few years. their policies and practices seem to be cut from a different bolt of cloth. however, careful management of their out of frequency behavior can result in some excellent deals, as noted by the OP. a well deserved you suck my man. enjoy th enew toy and use it in good health for many years to come.
there's a solution to every problem.......you just have to be willing to find it.

Here is a sample I just made. Set up took a little longer than I expected. The head needs to apply a 75-85 pounds of pressure on the workpiece and mine was only doing about 40. After much tinkering and reading the manual and old carvewright forum posts I finally got it to 80. After that it was pretty quick and simple. I originally made a much more elaborate design but after I finished the program estimated it would take about an hour to complete the carving. Since it was just a test I took everything out but the lettering. There is a bit of tear out which I think would come out easily with some sanding. I accidentally knocked a piece of the "E" when I was brushing the dust away. Although you can't really tell in the pic. I'll have to read up more on what types of bits to use in certain situations.

I have been thinking about a CompuCarve, but like you the price point for my needs is, well, excessive. Almost bought a used one in September, two days later our dryer quit, so I guess there was a message in there somewhere.

              Have fun,

Thanks for the heads up. One of the members posted a link with some nice video tutorials. Very helpful but I just wish they gave you the option to forward/rewind the individual vids.

I stopped by my brother's house yesterday evening in Irvine and he asked me to help him pick up a treadmill he ordered online through Sears Costa Mesa. Well as my new general practice now everytime I go to a Sears branch I head over to the tool section and check out their Close Out folder. I couldn't believe what I found. Compucarve bits on Clearance What are the odds?!? I check them out they have the $130 set for $38 and the $228 set for $68. I bring them over to cashier to pay for them and they ring up even less $22.93 and $12.93. The cashier calls the manager over and asks if these prices are correct and he quickly confirms that they are and tells me that he has even more bits on clearance. I ended up walking away with (2) 1/8" carving bits and (2) 1/16" for $4.93 each (originally $50 each) and set of router bit adapters for $5.97. They had the used box checked off on the tag and the wrapping was tattered but when I opened them they were still in the wax wrapping. So unless Sears re-applied the wax I'm pretty sure they're new.

The strange thing was I after I brought the Compucarve home I immediately checked out after market bits for it and was watching a few listings on ebay. If I didn't find this deal I probably would have gotten the used set on ebay and payed twice as much for just the bit set alone.

Nice score. That software looks like Vcarve, is it? I recently built a cnc router mill, and use Vcarve for creating vectors and generating machine code. I also use Unigraphics NX5 for 3D design and milling.
