    Shop Cleanliness

Anyone have any tips on cleaning up the shop? It's gotten to the point where I have to pout for a half hour or so before the wife gets busy with the broom and vac. Today I heard her muttering something about "minimum wage." Short of getting a new wife --I have too much invested in the current one-- does anyone have thoughts on cleaning the shop and keeping it reasonably clean? How would Norm do it?

I believe Norm does it by hired help.

By the way, What exactly IS shop cleanliness?

Isn't this what a shop really should look like?

When she parks her car with the windows open, in front of the big door, just get out the leaf blower and dust the shop. After that she should be happy to help...

Here's the rule that works at our house, if her truck sleeps outside, so do I.

What I do and it works pretty well is every time you enter the shop, put away 10 things. I also found that if everything doesn't have a place, the shop can never get clean.

While admitting that most times I have a disorderly shop... some things that work for me are the 10 things rule, putting things away before starting another project and at least trying to make sure everything has a place it can be put.

Anytime I hit the end of a step in a project, like cutting the pieces for a section, I stop and put away all the tools before moving on. When I unclamp a glue up, the clamps go straight tho the rack.

Working on a covered deck has one advantage. After the tools are put away for the evening, an air hose makes quick work af any remaining sawdust.

I'm with Pappy. Having said that I have a tendency to put away too many things and have to get them out again! Then there's the other issue of finally getting fed up with how/where something has been stored for the last 20+ years, taking the time to change it and then, not being able to readily find it for the next 6 months.
                          Blessings,
                          Chiz

                            Chiz,
I know a guy who puts a sticky note where the tool used to live when he changes a tool location.

I always do a complete clean before I start a new project. My problem right now is that in my small shop, I just added a Shopsmith ER and an 18" Grizzley band saw that I bought at auction. I have to eliminate a 14" bandsaw and a Craftsman Radial Arm saw to make room. I am building a deck and have too many other irons in the fire. I need to put an ad up on craigslist I guess.
