I have seen this same complaint on virtually every brand wireless router out there, usually after a year or two of use. I also have had two routers over the years start dropping the wireless signal. I have done the firmware upgrades, used site monitoring software, stood on one foot and held a pickle in the air, but in the end replacing the router always fixed it for another couple years.

Well, I won't elaborate where I wrote that original post from.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. My first Netgear ("b") had the same
issue but then it seemed to be because of nearby cordless phones ringing.
This one is a b/g and I just don't feel like buying a new one. I think I will
put it on a timer like someone here had suggested.

you are correct; sounds like cordless phone interference.... they can use the same frequency, if you search cordless phone and wifi you will see this is an issue, I have this problem occasionally with my wife's macbook when the neighbor uses there cordless phone, it took awhile to isolate this (standing on one foot and pickle in the air also
, you my be able to change the channel your wireless is using but it will only work for a bit until the cordless phone switches to that channel.... even if you buy new hardware you could have interference you can not control, neighbors, black helicopters, aliens....

Ummm… I refuse to answer on grounds that I might embarrass myself.
My 7-year-old Airport Base Station is still going pretty strong, only refusing to connect about twice a month. Taking advantage of the sales tax holiday and my educator's discount to upgrade to a new Base Station tomorrow, so I'll have better throughput (sometimes 5 laptops on the network nowadays) and use a shared HD for Time Machine. Also picking up a printer for #1 Son (now known as College Boy).

My first wireless, purchased in 2000, a "B" is still running for the fellow that I gave it to 5 years ago. My second airport "G", purchased in '04 is still running at my US home. My "N" airport WPA2 protected and with daily backup of my system going through it; also two printers (a laser and photo inkjet) hooked to it for wireless printing. Love the freedom to move from room to room. But I don't take my laptop to the bathroom!Ummm… I refuse to answer on grounds that I might embarrass myself.

I will give a hint - if anyone wants to crack my WPA code, I hope you are fluent in Japanese, and it is not a commonly known Japanese word like "samarai" or "sushi" either!

Wellll, it is close - in that those ARE Japanese words! "gaikokujin" is three characters out of 50,000. My password has 3 to 6 (not saying which) of the 50,000 - with some random numbers thrown - and the permutations take it into the billions. If someone wants to sit outside my house and figure that out and see what they can steal from a ministry's salary, they sure are bored with life!

That said, I do have a free weekend coming up…
Just got back from the Apple Store with a new Time Capsule. Making an appt. with a Personal Shopper saved me from waiting in line. It's a tax free weekend in Missouri, and everywhere I went was packed, except the Apple Store. They were like a popular restaurant, only letting in the same number of people who just left.
I'll be taking the network down later tonight to install the new Time Capsule.

altho some here claim their wireless routers have worked "forever" there are a lot of anecdotal stories like mine of going bad every two years; I have replaced three so far. On the last one, i could see the wireless signal strength coming and going every 2-3 minutes and the wireless controller software on the laptop signal connecting... connection lost... connecting... connection lost.... endlessly. It was definately not interference.
I think that's where you are headed. a timer will not work eventually, just buy a new router, they're cheap enough.
