Sarge,
May I offer a different point of view. There are plenty of animal rescues around us and plenty of dogs in those rescues. Survival rate for dogs at such places is really miserable. About 15% of dogs that get there will ever come out. That means that by taking a dog for adoption from a shelter you are saving that dogs life. If so happens that the dog will not be able to stay with you for entire 12 years - so what? Every year it stays with you - is a happy year you have given it as a gift. The dog does not care about that "insure" stuff, it just wants to have a home for as long as it lasts. If you don't do it - the pup will last 3-6 months in a shelter until some desease will get it. You have already missed a chance to give 2 years of happy life to some pup and 2 years of companionship to yourself.

He's gonna be big enough to saddle and ride!
