    Sarge,
May I offer a different point of view. There are plenty of animal rescues around us and plenty of dogs in those rescues. Survival rate for dogs at such places is really miserable. About 15% of dogs that get there will ever come out. That means that by taking a dog for adoption from a shelter you are saving that dogs life. If so happens that the dog will not be able to stay with you for entire 12 years - so what? Every year it stays with you - is a happy year you have given it as a gift. The dog does not care about that "insure" stuff, it just wants to have a home for as long as it lasts. If you don't do it - the pup will last 3-6 months in a shelter until some desease will get it. You have already missed a chance to give 2 years of happy life to some pup and 2 years of companionship to yourself.

      Woodboy,

We live in coyote country too. Most nights we hear their serenade up on the hills behind our house. Our vet recommended that we not allow our pups in the yard, unsupervised, until they were the size of a coyote.

There are always lots of "lost" cat posters in our neighborhood.

Since you have Lab experience, I don't need to warn you about their ability to clear the coffee table with their tails.

Great looking pup! The picture of him curled up asleep is my favorite.

Geez Louise! Did you see the size of his feet??? He's gonna be big enough to saddle and ride!

          Good looking pup, though.

I had dogs all through my formative years (almost all Beagles—I'm still partial to them) but 3/4 of my human family is deathly allergic, so no pup in my house… I have two teenage sons, though, so there's plenty of mess…

Absolutely adorable. I have a 10 year old (in black, though). My best friend ever. All my dogs have been my best friends.
