    Weird Dogs

We have 2 dogs, one is 3, it is Lab, male. The 2nd dog is a mini dashhound, it is 2, it lives inside

the lab lives outside. They play in the back yard several times a day. Now the weird

part. they chew on rocks. I have a short driveway in the back that is gravel, the get one

chew it the other one takes it away, and so on. Anybody seen anything like this?

Yep, mine leave them all over the place. I really love it when I mow the yard. They'd rather have a rock or a piece of wood than any sort of store bought toy. The more rocks I throw away, even more get unearthed. They even pull the mortar out of the holes in a pile of bricks I've got. I also had to move a couple small wood scrap bins up higher.

They are half bassett, maybe half lab. Not too sure about the other half, but their mother was full bassett and had a knack for escape.

You might think about getting them chew toys. Vets get big money for dental work.

You might also consider feeding them at least once a day...

We have two mini Dachshunds, they don't eat rocks but love ice cubes. When we give them one our 10 month old female will drop hers and try to take the one away from our 3 year old male, it's a riot to watch.

We had another German Shepherd a few years ago, that would actually pick up concrete blocks, and carry them all over the yard. Her elevator didn't go all the way up to the top floor.

Do you have a grill or smoker close?

A late friend, used to grill at the edge of his patio, by the gravel. His daughters dogs, he used to sit, would go over and clean any grease or anything dropped off of them.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Don't do much cooking outside, when we do it's on the deck. We feed them twice daily,

they have a bunch of toys, but they love to chew on rocks, and they do like wood also,

                treated wood. Bill

My goofy lab likes grabbing hunks of Pecan and Mesquite from the BBQ wood pile and chew on them...

treated wood??! That can't be good!

I've seen moose lick the road for salt, are they actually chewing the rocks or just slobbering on them?

Feed 'em too much and they lighten up on hairy rat (squirrel) control.

My last dog (shepherd / husky / billy goat mix) never had a problem staying on our deck until my grandfather cleaned a fish on the railing. The juices dripped down onto the lattice below the railing. After he had eaten every bit of the lattice that had fish juice on it, he realized he had a hole through which he could leave and visit any other dog around. After that, whenever he wanted to go for a stroll, he'd eat through the deck.

We decided he was part goat when he was a puppy and ate an entire bag of aluminum / tin cans that our scout troop had collected from one of the local roads.

Since your dogs like to eat rocks, you sure there isn't chicken or some other bird with a gizzard in their pedigree somewhere?

When I was a little boy we had a lab that loved playing fetch with a ball. Just like 99.9% of labs do. This one took it to the extreme though. He would find anything round and bring it to you to throw. So one day my father decided he would fix him of that. For whatever reason there was an old bowling ball in the garage and he rolled it down the hill behind the shop. Not a steep incline, but a fair slope. The dog tried for a half hour to pick it up, no luck. Dad laughed and laughed about that until his stomach hurt and said something to the effect of, "He will wear himself out eventually!" Well, the old dog was smarter than my father in this respect. Eventually he decided to roll it around with his nose and after about a thousand tries he finally gets it all the way up the hill and rolls it over to my father, quite literally hours later, wanting to go again........

We had to put the bowling ball away.

That dog would even retrieve old tires. We rolled one across the yard and he dragged it and dragged it until it finally caught on something and flipped up over his neck and he brought it back, in his mouth and flipped up around his neck like a partial collar. The next time he leaned forward and bit the inside of the rim closest to him and heaved it up until it was like before and from then on would play fetch with a tire.

After a couple of times of him scattering old tires around the yard dad finally cleaned all the junk out from behind the shop. To this day I am not ever shocked when a dog brings back something odd, oversize, bulky or whatever. I am sometimes amazed at their ingenuity though. Smart little buggers!
