PSA: Remember to use salt or something

Walking to work today I went down hard on a sidewalk about halfway between home and the shop. It was a cartoonish fall, where your feet go forward, and you drop to the ground and hit your head and everything.

I called my wife and asked her to come w/ the van and take me home. Then I tried to get up. I started pushing myself forward on the ice till I could find some bare concrete to get some traction on and ended up moving at least fifteen feet. The guys entire sidewalk was nothing but glare ice with a sprikle of snow on top.

So if you live where it is cold, please salt your walk if it is required. I know times are tough and salt isn't free. But my tail bone and back hurt like heck, and I have tingling in my left heel again, and my weekend (at the very least) is ruined.

    Rant off.

I hate to say it, but failure to maintain one's property like that is also leaving one's self open for a personal injury law suit... While I am not recommending Phil do so, it would appear he would be able to...

We had snow with freezing rain a while back followed with bitter cold. Under those conditions the un-cleard sidewalks were the best to walk on. Those that had been cleared of snow had a coating of ice that salt wouldn't melt.

Around our town if you fail to maintain your sidewalks, like removing snow and taking care of ice in bad weather our city fines you. Businesses and home owners and renters are required to do so. My boss has to shovel the snow from around two sides of our parking lot/store entrances. Where we live we do not have sidewalks except to our vehicles and that is taken care of by a special department in our house called a 13 year old son.

I have to make sure things are cleared for myself and for our 3 year old. I have bad knees and an ankle and don't want to fall and hurt anything worse than I already have. I can't afford to be out of work, and can't afford to have anymore surgeries on my knee or have one on an ankle.

I'm only sore and my tingling heel is a leftover from a previous back injury. So he doesn't have anything to worry about there.

But I am afraid to admit that I gathered myself up and went over and yelled at him. I pointed out that he had no bare concrete. His entire sidewalk was ice-covered. That, it was the only one. And that, one of his neighbors is in his 90's, and there is blind woman living just four doors away.

I told him a bunch of other stuff, too.

I think I may have came off as stark-raving mad. I'm embarrassed to walk down that block now.

You would have a hard time with it. You have X number of hours to clear the walks before you can get ticketed. Around here you are given 24 hours.

I'm glad you are feeling better. We had a guy at work fall on ice in the parking lot and bashed up his hand. He was on modified duties for a while and the company who looked after our snow removal caught it proper.

I grew up outside Buffalo NY and remember times we would salt our porch and steps and nothing would happen it was so cold, of course the salt did give some traction. We didn't have sidewalks to worry about though.

                  He would fail that test.

The reason his sidewalk was the only one on the block that was glare ice is because he never clears it unless there is a very large snowfall.

Then you get a few thaws that turns the packed snow into a puddle, and then a freeze that turns it into a skating rink.

Somehow he always has time to clean his driveway down to bare pavement, though.

Thank God spring is on the way. I've had enough of this winter.

In Alaska, while coming out of the house I hit Black Ice and went three feet in the air, with my body parallel to the ground before gravity kicked in.

I asked the local folks what the locals would say in such a situation.

                    Theasked what did I say.

                    I said "Oh Sh*T"

                    They said that covers it!
