    The octuplets

I'm sure everyone heard about the woman with 6 kids, giving birth to 8 more. This is a real problem when it comes to paying for the hospital. It's estimated it will be around $1,000,000, and the state of California might have to pick up the tab. How are they going to do that when they're in a big money crunch now? Who is going to raise all those kids (monetarily)? Somebody's gonna have to foot the bill, but who?

I read in this morning's paper that she was already on the public dole. That being California and all I wouldn't be surprised if they go afrer the male whose sperm fertilized the eggs.
Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things

      yep crazy topic,
i have no idea what to say on her.
she already had 6, so now she's up to 14 babies.
i'll just quote barack obama (referring to ceo bonuses)
this is "the height of irresponsibility"

with all the attention and controversy it caused, she'll definitely attract some money somehow, who knows. donations,tv appearances, maybe a book deal :-D

This is a sticky business deciding how many kids someone should have. I have a lot of patients who had 13 or 14 kids the old-fashioned way--they found them under the cabbage heads. And, I feel sorry for the kids who will always be tagged with this controversy through no fault of their own.

2 conclusion: I think it's irresponsible and maybe immoral for someone to bring so many kids into the world without a clear way to support them. And, I think it's unethical for a doctor to implant so many embryos with the possibility that the women would try to bring them all to fruition. If you know anything about medicine, the chance that a catastrophe would not happen is extremely small.

The citizens of California, except they are broke, so it will likely get passed on to the rest of the U.S. taxpayers in one way or another. Or California will try to make it up with traffic tickets...

I don't know what to say about her but I can't agree more with the grandmother who told reporters that what her daughter did was "unconscionable."

I think the fertility doctor that handled both of her litters should pay for their upbringing.

And that will put a stop to that.

I don't agree John. Any such discussion has always been allowed, so long as the tone is dispassionate and overt politics/religion is avoided.

I see nothing in either the topic or the posts that show any disrespect to women in general (as against criticism of one specific individual), or anything inappropriate or even political.

I think we have all agreed that policing the forums exessively is only counter productive, and that the various moderators are adequately alert to anything untoward. The rest of us can chill...

The thread you are referencing made an implied endorsement of neutering people. I see nothing like that in this thread. It was not the topic that was the problem with the other thread, it was the way it was presented.

This is one of those threads that is so close to the line IMHO. David thinks it passes muster, and he may be right. When I see one of these threads I just have to wonder what the purpose of posting it here is? I can see this topic drifting into a discussion of both politics and religion. I understand how the issues involved trouble folks.

In these tough times we are in is it really productive to have this discussion? Did any of us cause it? Could any of us have prevented it? The fact of the matter in this case is this time this post was reported as a bad post. The decisions of the moderators is pretty much final. In matters of gray most of the time we believe in self correction.

                      Close to the line?

Please note that I am not complaining here. I have been a member of this forum a long time, but I am not sure what line we are talking about here. This is not political and not religion. As far as inappropriate for small children, I guess I don't see that either. The purpose, as I see it is that it is a current event, that is all over the news, and raises ethical and philosophical issues. As far as being productive to have this discussion, most of the topics on Coffeepot are not productive in the real sense.

Again, I am not complaining, I am just confused as to what the issue is.

                      Respectfully,

I think it is close to the line only because it could easily become R/S/P with a single comment, all three are applicable.

My personal opinion is the lady is a weirdo. She may be a great "mom" but I'm not sure she can take care of her offspring. She is already living on credit, has no home and using food stamps, and has been for awhile. Its not like this was an accident or happened all of a sudden or that she fell on hard times. Apparently she even shopped for a doctor that would get her into this situation, some had turned her down.

                          Tom,

I think weirdo is an understatement. A single mom with 6 kids has 8 more, that is not exactly normal, and that is why it is the news.

We planned my first daughter, and then it was a few years when we got a surprize, a very pleasant surprize, when my wife got pregnant with our second and last daughter. We would have loved to have had another, but it wasn't in our budget. We were responsible adults. I don't think that can be said in this case.

I think our Admins do a terrific job. I really am not criticisizing, I usually don't post on a matter such as this. I was just surprized on this one.

The issue, Bill is not the subject it is exactly where the discussion of this subject can lead. It can lead to a political and/ or religion based discussion. "Ethical and philosophical issues" usually are closely related to either, some or both politics and religion. The vast majority of Coffee Pot threads are simply entertainment or boring (to some) off topic discussions such as the ones dealing with writing code, software, applications, hardware and the like. Most are productive in that they offer amusement or an opportunity to get answers not even remotely related to woodworking.
