As long as you realize that is what you are doing. I cringe every time I see a commercial for a 'refund anticipation loan' although I realize that there are people who could genuinely use the money. I prefer to have my W2 adjusted to owe a little. The government doesn't give me interest on my money they keep all year so I save it myself and earn a little interest. Before I got married I would try to neither owe nor receive. The best year I had I owed 2 bucks to the Feds and less than a dollar to the state.

Nope, I'll start on April 14th. Anyway us folks in CA will be getting IOUs from the state if we have a refund. Funny thing is the state comptroller issued a statement a few days ago about the "IOU" in lieu of a refund and then promptly ordered $2 million worth of new office furniture. What the heck we are only $42 billion in the hole over the next two years so $2 mil is drop in the bucket.

+ 1 !!! I ALWAYS owe both the feds and state, they steal enough of my money already and I'm not going to give them an interest-free loan on top of that.As long as you realize that is what you are doing. I can't finish my taxes until I get all of the K-1's from various investments and there is no early deadline for them to be issued so I usually don't start until sometime in March.Comment

I have had that discussion before - with others and with myself
- and decided that if that money was with me, I'd only spend it; and if not, get a pittance as interest.
A lump-sum is a great boost at the end of the year, and allows me to use it the best way I can.It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

Taxes are done and filed. Used TurboTax and direct deposit for refunds. The State refund hit the bank about a week ago and the federal refund today ( 2/10/09 ). No big deal as this year it's going to a new frig instead of new tools or wood, but still beats the heck outta having to send them more money to help bail out the crooks and others!

Got everything together--need to get it into accountant soon. With divorce last year and tuition and other complications, I don't trust myself to do it accurately or legally. Most years the accountant more than pays for herself by finding deductions I was not aware of.
Maybe next year my life will be simple enough I can do it myself...Jeff

+1 on TurboTax. We've used it every year since we got married, with the exception of one year where we tried a cheaper brand. I say cheaper in the derogotory sense of the word. My wife put in all the numbers and massaged it for almost a week while we were gathering documents and figures. I reviewed all pages on Saturday (2/7) and hit the e-file button.
'Little man' is giving us a nice sized refund this year. We don't like a big refund either, but we always try to have a small one. I don't need the worry of having an unexpected hit. We run our budget pretty close to the bone.- Chris.Comment

I can relate to that. The last time I did my own taxes via turbo tax I figured I owed uncle sam about $6k (self employed & didn't pay quarterly). My wife finally convinced my to spend some money on an accountant. Their verstion of that return had me getting back $28 (it could have been more, but I didn't want to get too creative). I've been using that accountant for over 12 years now. Well worth it in my case.ErikComment

DEEPTHROAT, said there wasn't any money left
for us poor folks to get a refund. And those that owe, must double up what they gotta pay the feds. At least I got ours done early this years and sent the bigs guys some extra change to help out the poor banking people.

We haven't made enough money for several years to have to file taxes, but I'll probably figure it out to see if I might be due a small refund.

Taxes are done. I just finished them and I owe an additional $1400 between federal and state.
I budgeted for more than that so I'm taking the family out to dinner.

I got my refund check back from the state--$2200, but I owe Uncle Sam $1000 and owe accountant $300, so that leaves...$700. Time to pay off some bills, plus a little something for Daddy here...Jeff

Corporation made some, almost caught up with 2005 losses. Recycle co. went in the hole 20k because of a leg injury and poor management on my part. Maybe prices will rise and I will make up for the losses.Comment
