    Wearing jewelry

I just received my last issue of Woodcraft (didn't renew). There was a short article about a guy who got hurt while using a biscuit cutter (bad technique). It mentioned that he was wearing a watch, which could have made it worse.

I never gave much thought to wearing jewelry in the shop, but just think if your hand happened to hit the blade on a TS, and a tooth grabbed a ring! That could really spell trouble. Fortunately I don't wear a ring, but I do wear a watch at all times. Do you wear any type of jewelry when working in the shop? Have you ever thought about the risk involved?

I wear my wedding band and usually a watch while working in the shop. I figure if I get close enough for a saw to catch either of them, I already have screwed up and am going to be bleeding with or with wearing accessories.
If you can read this you assembled wrong.

I wear my wedding ring. I never wear a watch. My ring is a simple band. I've always figured if my hand is close enough so a blade grabs the ring then even if I didn't have the ring on I'd be getting hurt anyway. If I had a class ring or somethig with a big bauble I'd take that off. I don't wear my ring when I am doing electrical work.

        Watch only.

A friend a few years ago lost his left ring finger when he swung down from a scafford. There was a 1/4 x 20 bolt that hooked his ring; and his body weight was enough that, well, kept his finger up there on the bolt with the ring. To this day, he does not wear any rings on his remaining digits.

I wear no jewelry in the shop at all. I did forget to take my watch off once, and the sweat underneath it picked up some Bolivian rosewood dust, leading to one of the most miserable contact allergy reactions my Dermatologist had ever seen. Never again! I am now 100% diligent about the trinkets...

I wear no jewelry in the shop. My wedding band is not so simple, so I often have it off so as not to damage it. LOML would complain, but I think she wears hers even less. When she got pregnant she stopped wearing it due to swelling, which caused many a funny look at here towards the end. People are nosy as can be, usually had a laugh seeing how long she could "shock" them in casual conversation before it was revealed that she was indeed married.

Cracker, I had a horrid reaction to Bubinga once, so I empathize with your reaction.

None for me, either. FIL lost part of 2 fingers when his wedding ring caught on a TS balde. No way to know how much damage would have been done without the ring, but he said it jerked his hand back into the blade when it hit the blade.

Hmm. Hadn't even thought about it until you asked. I wear a watch, but usually under a long-sleeved shirt. Also wear my wedding band, but I'm pretty religious about using guards, push sticks and other safety devices so my hands are well away from moving machinery.

No rings or watch. Long sleeves rolled up. Safety glasses on. Guards always in place and push sticks close by so there is no excuse not to use them. Do I sound like a chicken?

I have a stud in my right ear. I don't remove it, doubt tha my ear will ever get close to a blade.

I used to wear a ring when in the shop when I was younger, but working on cars, and getting grounded by my ring one too many times convinced me to knock that off quick... Now I wear no jewelry whatsoever in the shop...

I have several watches, I rarely if ever wear them.

I question the thought process behind "if my finger is close enough to get caught, I'd have gotten hurt anyway." It might mean the difference between a nick on the finger and having the blade catch it and take the whole finger. I'm all for injury minimization. Sure, I'm a little hurt, but given the choice between stitches and rehab, I'll go for stitches every time.

y'all going to have to stop wearing those dangly earrings now, ya heah?

I don't wear jewelry in the shop (or out) much, if any.
what scares me is wearing those nice warm fleece hoodies in the shop, the two drawstrings used to snug the hood dangling from around my neck gives me pause around the table saw, router, miter saw, etc. I can just see them getting wound up in the arbor and drawing my head close, closer, too close to the spinning thing.

Zero jewely in the shop. No watch, rings, or anything.
No gloves when working with things that are static mounted and spin.
No loose clothing that could possibly get snagged in anything that spins.
