Now I guess the pilot really is the "captain"...

Now that I think about it, it probably is easier to sail a plane than it is to fly a boat...

        Low+slow+birds = bad scene.

The pilot did a great job and he deserves a medal.

There's a garbage dump on short final at our local airport and I've almost hit the **** birds that like to hang out there on more than one occasion.

        Expletive deleted...

Pilot: Folks, the weather is alot warmer in Charlotte, N.C. than it is in NY City. Bad news is that we have to row the rest of the way.

          or

Stewardess: Folks today's inflight lunch includes "Fresh Catch."

The last thing you want to hear while on a plane supposedly thousands of feet in the air..

"Hey look, is that a dolphin next to the wing?"

The pilot did a masterful job of landing in the river.

They interviewd a retired airline pilot on CBS radio. He said that birds have never hit his plane. But, that he had hit a lot of birds.

He also said that there is a saying that, airline pilots will do one thing in their career that earns every dollar they have received for flying. And, this guy just earned his.

Somehow I'm unable to see the lighter side of this - other than the fact that many in that plane cheated death, and maybe many on the ground too.

I keep thinking of the things that could have gone wrong - if it had been dark, or if it had happened a couple of minutes later when there was no river close-by but just urban areas, or if the pilot was not skilful or experienced to manage to 'land' on a runway made of water. If any of the passengers had fallen into the water (as in dunked in) or if the rescuers were slightly delayed, we'd have seen a bigger tragedy.

The most chilling scenario is if the pilot tried the river but ended up on Route 1 in Jersey City...

I'm thinking it might be too soon to joke about this, but maybe that's just me. Those folks were very very lucky that the captain did a masterful job of landing the plane and that there were boats that responded that quickly.

Think of the story, with pictures to prove it, that the passengers and crew will tell their gradchildren!

Just because some folks make light of a topic does not mean they take that topic lightly. Folks this topic was reported as being in poor taste. I don't exactly think of it in that way but the member that reported it made a very valid point. Most all of the passengers on this plane have a family and they may not see any humor in this. IMHO any that are offended by this can choose to just ignore it. I doubt that any who have posted light heartedly in this thread has done so with malice or contempt for the passengers or crew involved in this accident. I can empathize with their stress as I'm sure it is not fun nor funny in their eyes.

I hope that someone, somewhere, may just have captured something of the landing on film - still or moving - because that was one brilliantly skillful job. The likelihood of a cartwheel if one wing hits first is very high and the drag when the engines submerge must be immense. I'm amazed that it didn't nosedive. He must have come in really tail down - goodness knows what must have been going through his head.

Best news of all is the outcome, of course.

I'm sure many people were thanking their respective gods after this. The pilot and flight crew are hero's in my mind. I expect they will be receiveng more than one steak dinner in the coming weeks.

Levity is a healing for most of us after the fact. And it is never too soon for a joke. I will bet that most of the people on the plane cracked a smile shortly after stepping from the plane. A safe bet would also be on the number of thank you prayers.

I disagree. Mayhap the OP knew that everyone survived when he posted this, but when I read the post all I knew was that a plane had crashed. I didn't know if there were survivors, etc. I submit that before you have any details, don't joke about it. Or give a more complete report and include a link to the full story with survivors. Something like that anyhoo.

I'm pretty sure the families waiting for word of whether their loved ones survived would also disagree that it is 'never too soon for a joke'.
