Just went out to my shop for my morning coffee and cigar and the temp. was 30,outside temp. is -4. I started the small propane heater and thought to myself that the improved weather stripping around the garage door was worth the effort. Most days the shop/garage is about 25 -30 degrees warmer then outside.

How cold is your shop.

My shop has ranged from 59 to 64 degrees in the last 48 hours. That's about 80 degrees warmer than it was outside Monday night.
It's heated this year and the thermostat is set at 62. Even without heat, though, it has never dropped below freezing. Two of the four walls are underground, the third wall is against heated space and the front wall is insulated to R28 with two R-9 insulated garage doors.
My heater is shown here and is on the same circuit that runs to the house AC since they should never be running at the same time.

My shop is unheated. The temp in there right now is 63 F. It will be cooler in there tomorrow, according to the weather forecast.Comment

Absolutely not. I never complain about the winters here because I really hate hot weather. If I could replace August with January every year I would. I'd probably be lynched by the sane people of the state though.Chr's

My shop is mid 60s, whatever the basement is. It pretty much stays that temp all year round. When the wood stove is really going it gets up to mid 90s.David

Hmm Lets see current (1/14/09 8am) outside temp 1.9F since my shop is an unattached garage that would make the inside temp ahh 1.9F. Tools now too cold to touch without gloves.Comment

Not sure how an attached garage could attain the same temp as outside unless the doors are open due to heat loss due to wind movement outside...
When I got up at 6:00 this morning I Had the same curiosity.
Outside temp League City, Texas at my back door, 24 degrees F, shop temp, 50 degrees F. As you may or may not know for the new readers... my shop is an attached garage. 26 degree F difference. I have Reflectix insulation on one of the doors. The other currently is "insulated" as it were by hanging old sleeping bags up from it...
I need SOMETHING to close the gap between the door and the wall..
Do they make weatherstripping to do that for roll up doors? Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel. Please check out and subscribe to my Workshop Blog.Comment

That Reflectix seems to be helping more than a little. Ouside air temp was 30 degrees and shop temp was 50. I have so much lumber in my shop now that if I'm working out there in the evening and keep it right around 60, I only lose about 10 degrees over night.Comment

I just went out there and mine is 51. Note sure of the exact outside temp but it will be in the 40s.Jon

I really can't answer that. Last summer during the remodel of the house, we had 1/3 of it insulated with spray foam changing the walls from r-19 to r-35, added insulation to the whole attic to R60, and insulated the garage ceiling. We have electric heat in the part of the house that was re-insulated, and so far my overall bill is down about $20/month but it has been much colder this year than last. Just plain too many variables for me to figure out the answer.
The only thing I don't like about it is that the thermostat is high med low and one dot below low seems to keep the shop in the low 60s pretty consistently. I have a digital thermometer that shows temp and humidity hourly for the last 48 hours.
I also used a couple of low cost space heaters out there from time to time last winter and they ran much more frequently than this does. In the really cold weather we've had it runs for about 5 minutes every 45 minutes or so.Chr's
