    Computer question

I had Word document that I wanted to save to a CD. I have a CD and a DVD drive. I could not save the document to either drive because of error messages Incorrect Function and You do not have access to the folder (G: or H: ). See administrator for access. This is the first time I've seen this. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Nero software came with the DVD drive. I guess the other is generic.

Are you running XP? Does your wife have her own account and was she logged in before you did? I get the same message when I try to use my DVD burner if my wife logs into our desktop first. The fix is for me to log out, then log her out then log back in.

Yes, I'm running XP. I'm the only one logged on. Other people don't use my computer. I thought that maybe after shutting it down for the night, it might work O.K. this morning. No luck.

I think I have the same problem as you, so hopefully a solution is suggested. For the last couple of months, I haven't been able to access either the CD or DVD drives (they don't even show up in windows explorer). Obviously, we don't use these drives much, but my boy misses his games that rely on discs.

I just found out that I can't save pictures from my digital camera either. The message tells me it can't be saved because the file is open. I'm even giving it a filename other than the numbers from the camera. I have no reason to think I might have gotten a virus, except for this.

Ed, are you trying to write to the CD from within Word? That sometimes does not work and you need to use other softwares like Nero etc to write to the CD/DVD.

For the pictures, did you get an error while saving to the CD/DVD or to your hard-drive? If to the CD, how are you doing it - by using the copy command?

Mike, it's possible that you inadvertantly 'turned off' the device. Check here - using the Control Panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager, expand the CD/DVD option, right click on the device-name and confirm it is installed and enabled. Or maybe you have been using something like Tweak UI?

If all that is working fine, I'd even open up the case to see if any of the connecting cables are loose; but save that for the last resort.

This part will not help but I just can not let it slip by: Your pc is infected with the Windoz virus!

Can you log on as admin and allow yourself access to every thing? Do you have a seperate ADmin log in or just only one user account?

Sounds like you have it set to not allow any other than Admin to do certian tasks. How to fix this I do not have any step by step directions but I'd likely be able to figure it out if it was infront of me. Trial and error, blue screen and restart method...

You are trying to write directly to CD from an application such as word? Is this a CDRW that has been formatted? If so DLA should allow that, but assuming it is CDR media, you will need to stash your files in a directory on the HDD first, then use your NERO to write the to the CD, and they will be read only.

As suggested by the last response, this happens to me when I have not formatted the CD. If you haven't, I would do that first.

Yes, I tried to save the file from within Word. I didn't know there might be a problem with that.

I tried saving the pictures to my hard drive from Photoshop. When I upload pics from the camera, I typically open them with Photoshop, then save as to my hard drive with no problem.

There are two accounts available. Both are set as administrator.

Aha! That's probably the answer. I'm using CDR. Thanks for all the replies. But I still wonder what's going on with saving the pics? Would a system restore be worth a try?

Saving the Word file to the hard drive was the answer. I rebooted the computer, and tried to save the pics from the camera, via Photoshop. Success!! What a great forum! Thanks guys.
