What Did You Do This Weekend?

Resurrecting an old thread we used to have on a regular basis, what did you do?

I made my mitre saw station, cut the new router table top to size, stained the patio furniture, the deck and the timbers around the play area. I also primed and painted the little shed and got the first coat on half of the big shed. Oh yeah, I also started installing the new planer motor.

Finished a wine bottle holder. Added tool holders and cut some shelves to add to the potting bench my wife "did not want". Went to a cookout Saturday afternoon. Helped a friend install the disconnect for his hottub, spent a couple hours working at Mom's house getting ready for the big dig drainage project. Took my son computer shopping, college starts in a month.

And, took my daughter for her first couple of driving lessons. Don't worry we never left the parking lot, she never went above 20 mph.

    another laid back, slow weekend

Worked Saturday but did make it to McCoy's to pick up the drip edge for the Playpen roof. Got the roof finished today. The 'Boss' has already commented on the reflection of the galvanized trim so I may have to get some self etching primer and paint for it.

The neighbors are out of time so I have been taking care of their chickens and feeding the cat and 11 week old kitten that 'hang out' there. The kitten was living in the carport and somewhat skittish around people. (Read almost wild) Last night I guess she decided I was ok and started rubbing on my leg for attention. Brought her to the house to show LOML and it looks like she is here to stay.

Assembled, and I hope correctly, my new HF Central Machinery 32208 14" band saw. spun it up, got too danged hot in the shop and came in to kick back with the wife... The saw had a mean vibration at first, then I double checked the adjustable feet, made a minor adjustment, not it runs smooth as silk. Way better than I would expect HF tools to run...

Oh yeah, and we spent some quality time at a laundromat since my dryer is busted and I am waiting for repair parts to come in...

New fan belts in the truck, new solenoid on a sprinkler valve, installed some hanging ceiling storage in the shop, rearranged some tools, watched some Olympics on the tube, got ready to run a couple new electrical circuits today in the shop, got a fat rat for Ms. Baby, drank some beer...

I started on Brians cracked bandsaw box prototype. I'm making the first one out of junk wood to get the kinks worked out.

                Let's see..

I built & stained a simple monitor stand for the wife for her work computer out of some cut-off bin plywood. Sanded an old TV tray for her to mosaic the top. Tried playing a game on my computer but discovered that it no longer wants to cooperate and crashes to the desktop (mobo has had it). Ended up playing Wii Sports with the wife. Watched a show about lottery winners, watched some Olympics and of course Big Brother. Oh, went to Wally World for groceries. Just a regular ol' weekend.

Bah humbug! (since you asked! ) We drove home 485 miles from vacation Saturday to find a backed up sink with broken garbage disposal, and a kicked in garage entry door (21 YO locked himself out two days in a row....he used the spare key the first day and left the spare key inside the 2nd time around! ).

A functioning kitchen sink is a "must have" with our large family so I tackled that first. Just because it worked for 3000 consecutive days before we left doesn't mean it's demise is his fault! I've giving him the benefit of the doubt...it just corroded and wore out....yeah, that's it.

The door on the other hand was 100% stupidity and was irresponsible. A single milivolt of brain activity and/or a phone call could have prevented this damage. He's paying, but unfortunately I'm installing....and getting blood from a stone still defies the laws of physics. The good news is that it's not 14°F outside!

The state of my shop (and mind) goes something like this....got a new saw two weeks ago, worked 48 hours in a 96 hour stretch right after, went on vacation for a week, will spend all waking moments of my remaining time off repairing damage, will work 48 hours in a 96 hour stretch starting Wednesday, and will still have a new saw that needs a fair amount of attention when I'm done Sunday morning. So we're back to "bah humbug"! (Within the first few pages, the book of Genesis accurately describes how life will is going to be for us from that point forward! ...."toil by the sweat of your brow"... )

Dug out footings for the front porch, poured the footings, cleaned up all of the old wood torn down from the previous porch. Had a couple of G & T's and watched some of the olympics

Spent both days mudding the garage walls and trying to come up with an arragement for shelves/drawers for the shop portion thereof. Oh, and waiting for Tom's book to see if I'm totally off my nut or not on the cabinet design.

I went to club field and got three good flights in with my Vigor. The helo is fitted with a 5 blade head and will soon become a H-3 Sea King.

Prepped blanks for 26 pen blanks for the Freedom Pens Project (to be donated to Servicemen and women).
Attended the Washington DC Pen Show to see what it was like and meet some fellow pen turners.
Turned 2 Cigar pens with snake skins and a European Fountain Pen in Cocobolo and prepped another 4 blanks to turn this week as I get a chance.

Took a minor road trip on Saturday. Visited a new mall; stopped by the local Harbor Freight to grab a few consumables; went out to dinner.

In the shop on Sunday, I worked a little more on my island range hood project. It's a freebie for a relative that I've been puttering along on at odd moments for several months now. Fixed a little problem with the leg vise on my workbench. Found places for a few more shoulder hooks on my ever-evolving hand tool rack. Sipped coffee and scratched and thought deeply about possible ways to shift a few major tools around, for better workflow -- something I might tackle in the fall, when it's cooler.

I started on a small cabinet for the shop. After I made a mistake, I quit for the day. Then I went to the hospital to visit a friend who has MS. My problems became non-existent.
