    It's Official--I'm a Doofus

Spent a couple of days jointing/planing some cedar for planters and benches for LOML. On day 2, suddenly shavings were spitting out of the top of the jointer. I checked the DC line (such as it is; 2 1/2" tube to a chip separator then to a ShopVac), no clog there. Must be a leak at the jointer.... Took the whole dust chute off, recaulked all the connections, taped every tiny little crack. Still no luck. For two hours I did this.

THEN I looked up in the jointer and found the giant ball of shavings blocking the dust port at the very top of the chute. *sigh*

Mamma told me there'd be days like these...

Maybe you were just tired. It's happened to me. I'll take the cord to the ROS or an electric drill and try to stick it into the air hose...duh.

I once used bolt cutters to take off a padlock because I had locked my keys inside. 2 seconds after I cut the lock, my co-worker kindly pointed out it was a combination lock! Doh!

I had one of those days a while back. Iwas in a hurry to finish something, I'm sure it was important. I was sanding something and moved the air cleaner to the end of the bench to catch all of the sanding dust. This was before it was insalled as it was intended. I reaced up and pluged it in and turned it on. It sucked the dust out of the air really well for about 10 seconds and then started smoking like crazy. I had pluged it into the 240 volt outlet. eek:

I knew better, but had one of those Dufus moments. Needless to say I was off to Grainger for a new motor, and had to delay what ever else I was doing.:

I think you should sue the idiot (or beat him up) that put a 120V receptacle on a 240V line in the first place.

That was my first thought too. There's enough little traps in the average shop without building your own.

Ummmm.... Nooooo.... But it's the 4" to 2 1/2" adapter that's caulked to a piece of DVW that's now glued to the chute. I musta been real tired.

Thanks for sharing the BTDT stories, guys. I just joined the fraternity!

When I was a young know-it-all of 16, my dad and I rebuilt the carb on my 1968 Riveria. Being a mechanic for 20 years, he had a habit of leaving off parts he felt didn't serve any purpose. I noticed there was a spring on the bench where he had put the carb together. After laboring for two hours trying to start the motor, he pulled the carb back off and headed back to the bench, where he spied the spring laying on the bench. He said, "Why didn't you tell me I left a spring out?" I said "I thought you knew what you were doing!"

For my smart-a$$ answer, I got to drive his truck to the parts store and buy another rebuild kit. Re-rebuilt the carb, and the car started right away.

Wish I still had that car...

It was a 240 receptacle it looks like this one.
