Late last night BIL#1 called and told us that the police found BIL#2 deceased in his home. He lived alone, and neighbors hadn't seen him in a while, and called the police.
What we know as of now is there is no cause of death that can be determined. His remains were decomposed to the point that he couldn't be identified. So, they will likely do a toxicology exam to see if that will reveal anything.
He was 50 yrs old, and a loner, and did not stay in close contact with the rest of the family. He led a very simple life, with no extravagance. He worked hard and was never on the taking end.
Tomorrow morning LOML will meet with our son and her brother (BIL#1) to go to the house and clean up. Not knowing what happened, we have to take care of his final plans, and go through all his available paperwork to find out if he had a will, his financial obligations, mortgage, any bank accounts, etc. We will have to get a lawyer to find out how to handle the situation. His house is about 250 miles north of us, and BIL#1 lives in NY. We don't have a local attorney, and undecided if we should get one there or close to us. It's going to be an intense weekend.
The detective on the case said there was no suicide note or any real obvious cause for death. He could have just had a heart attack or something like that. Besides having to clean out the house, renting a van and transporting all furnishings to a storage facility, all his paperwork will have to be gone through, and LOML will be bringing home his computer to see if there is anything that would reveal a problem.
This is one of the horrors we never want to think about. Living alone can definitely have its drawbacks.
