    Ever Used One?

For it's intended use, that is. I have chopped ice from a block at family gatherings when I was a kid. Both my Grandmothers had ice boxes.

Our's had a wood handle. This one was in a box of tools my Step Father gave me. The collage below is the castings on the handle as you roll it.

Dale, see if the phone numbers are still in service...

When I was a kid, we had an "ice box". Had to have ice picks, and I remember ours had a wood handle. Seems the saying "save it with ice" was pretty common. I don't know if it was a company advertising thing or not.

four digit phone numbers??? Love it! A simpler day and time.

I've needed 10 digits to dial my neighbor now for 15 years.

Our family "ice pick" had a wooden handle and I have used it many times. For that matter I use it about 4-5 times a day "now". When my mother developed demensia at 89 and I had to move her in.. I found that "ice pick" among her belongings when cleaning out her home.

It rest on my shelf with my chisels as it is used often as a punch to open and assist a drill bit from wandering on initial start up. Some things don't get retired... they just change professions and keep on keeping on.

Whenever I picture an ice pick, this is all I can think of:

I've never used it in this manner however.

We had an ice box when I was a kid, too. I remember when they would come around to deliver ice.

I too remember ice picks and when they delivered ice. My grandmother had a card that on one side had 25 on one end and 50 on the other, the other side had 75 and 100. If you needed ice you stuck the card in your screen door with the amount you wanted up and showing, the ice truck would stop and the guy would use his pick to break off whatever size you ordered, grab it with steel ice tongs and throw it over his shoulder and bring it in and put it in the box. I remember he had a big leather pad on his back to protect him from the ice.

No offense guys, but if you can remember the iceman coming 'round, you are officially OLD!

Hey, I saw the ice man!, The Iceman Cometh that is. Now I'll admit it wasn't opening night but does that make me officially old?

I have an ice pick. I have used it for an appropriate purpose (chiseling away at the ice on an old, not frost free, freezer...

The only "Ice Box" I have used is the typical Igloo cooler... And I have used block ice in that...

No idea how old this pick is, but the earliest phone number I remember us having was 2-3922 and I am pushing 60. No idea why I would still remember the number. BTW, it was a party line.

You're not that old that if when you went to school there was a history class.

More signs you are officially old:

--Your telephone had a party line or fewer than 7 numbers

--You listened to radio when there was only an AM, no FM

--Your family bought a brand-new car or truck with running boards and knew what they were used for

--You know who did American Bandstand before Dick Clark took it over

--You remember when Ricky Nelson was a teenager

--You were kept indoors during the middle of summer because of the polio epidemic

--You knew or heard of someone in an iron lung

--You used to listen to Lum and Abner

--You heard Hank Williams sing live

--You built or listened to a crystal radio

--You bought stuff made out of Bakelite before it became collectable

You'll notice that conveniently none of these apply to me...

Well all of them apply to me except for remembering who did bandstand before Dick Clark. That may only be because I'm so old I'm losing my memory though
