    Officially Unemployed

I just got off the phone with my boss a few minutes ago to update her on the status of my work in progress, and now, for the first time since high school, I'm officially unemployed. Tomorrow morning, my brother in law and I fly to Sacramento for the WW show and I'll worry about a job next week. I guess there won't be any big purchases this year.

what kind of line of work are you are/were involved in.

the commercial construction sector is doing ok for now. one lucrative section that i see talented people going into and working out of their homes after a few years of experience is drafting using cad software.

      just a thought.

Hang in there. I was unemployed for quite a while here in Pittsburgh, we didn't want to move because of proximity to LOML's family, and it took several years to get good solid work back in my industry.

I did a lot of other jobs over that span, and learned most of my woodworking knowledge. So I think I made good use of the time. Good luck! I feel for ya...

Basically, I stepped into a political quagmire. I was happily working at Coors out in Golden and was recruited by another company in the Denver area and started there in January. Then, shortly after I started the CIO got fired and the battle lines were drawn. The person that brought me in was loyal to the CIO and resigned, and in the beginning of March I got a call from a recruiter looking to fill a position with my skillset at this company so I mostly knew it was coming.

Even when you see the bus coming, it still hurts when it hits you. I'm going to have some fun this weekend, drink some Scotch, and smoke a few cigars, assuming that's legal in CA. According to the recruiter network, the market is hopping and I should find something quickly. My wife has a good job and has the health insurance so I'm not worried ... yet.

By the way, I design account software. Neither accounting nor programming were nerdy enough for me on their own.

Welcome to the club, I finally got a "part time" job after loosing this really crappy job working for a "friend" of mine.

I've been basically out of work since April 2002. I was the Creative Director of a New York Ad Agency that specialzed in Internet and Internet related B-to-B print ads.

After the dot com meltdown and 9-11, that was the death song for advertising in NYC.

Have had some really junk jobs, most of them paid less in one week than I earned in one day. But you just have to suck it up and do whatever comes your way, otherwise, you'll end up in one of those coats where the sleeves tie together behind your back and they make you sleep in a rubber lined room.

Life DOES go on, and don't get too bummed out..

I know what you and Bruce are going through. I lost my job March 31st. I had nearly 12 years in. Basically my boss got cancer and retired (he is now deceased). When he quit, 3 of us in house applied for the position. The Asst. Mgr. is the only one still there, and an idiot from outside was hired. I lasted 8 months longer than the other guy.

Good luck to you both on your searches, I know it is rough at my age (58) to start over.

                    Update

I heard late last Friday that GM wants me to work on a contract basis through the end of the year. They don't want to pay for me to travel so I'll be working out of my home office for the duration of the contract.

Glad you got a gig. Those temp contracts often turn into something permanent. Maybe yours will, as well.

Good luck on this venture. I hope it at least will open a door or two. I am still looking.

Me too, did start a part time job, really like it, but the money sucks and not enough hours.

                            Work from home

You say you did account programing, have you heard of a site called RentaCoder.com? Basically work from home doing programming for others. Good luck.

I've been unemployed for 38 years, and love it. Actually it's called "self-employed". It has its ups and downs, kinda scary really. I'm not sure it's the lesser of two evils. I don't have a boss per se, but each client is responsible for any of my paychecks. So, in effect I have many bosses. So, the question of whether or not a person will get fired is a little different than wondering if there will be money to pay the bills.
