I heard late last Friday that GM wants me to work on a contract basis through the end of the year. They don't want to pay for me to travel so I'll be working out of my home office for the duration of the contract.
It was not long after I was told I was retiring that I got a call from a V.P. asking me to "consult". Believe me, if the GM wants you to contract it means that they don't have your skill or knowledge. Remember that the wage you were earning plus benefits and overhead cost your company at least twice as much as your paycheck (before taxes) cost. Ask for that amount when you contract.
