Just last week I was feverish and achy but I wasn't sick. By the next day I was feeling pretty good, now I just have a little bit of a cold that is hanging on.

Never heard that before, but I imagine my problem with eggs, is eating at least 6 poached eggs at a time. (I don't buy them or I would do that all the time)

While I don't have kids (one gets it and spreads it to the next), I am around people ALL day. (so I still get exposed). The two biggest factors I contribute to not getting it are: 1. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands! and 2. Lot's of juice (I tend to do 20 ounces of OJ every morning).

As for the washing hands part, I just use soap. I believe that antibacterial stuff they push, kills both good and bad, and a little bit bad, can help build up an immunity (defense anyway) to it.

I think LOML and I being retired and having the flu shot help. We are not out in public a lot so that so that lessens the chance. We do take care of Grandaughter but she has had the shot also. We know that the shot is not good for all the variations this year, but not having to work and be out in public helps. We both have had slight head cold/sinus issues but that has been it. I to agree that being to clean or using all the stuff the push probably kils the good bugs and messes up your imune system. Taking precautions is good but some overdo it. Now when I visit people in the hospital then I do use all the stuff they supply to prevent picking up infections, the hand cleaning foam stuff in each room, When my mom was in the hospital before she passed on, I picked up some kind of infection that put me in the hospital for few days on an Iv Antibiotic, so now I am a lot more careful there.

I have young kids who get sick every winter from what they pick up at school, and my wife works in a hospital, so I don't stand a chance. Before I got married and had kids, I hardly ever got sick. Now I can count on being laid up at least once a winter.

Around here the flu is hitting a lot of people differently. A guy I work with was out for 5 days in bed. I got it for about 36 hours then I felt fine. No meds for me -- just OJ and zinc.

My wife is on day 3 or 4 with it -- that's the only thing worse than getting it yourself .

And apparently one of the major strains going around is different from this year's flu vaccine, making it pretty much useless if you get this particular strain. Still, it doesn't hurt to get the shot.

We get the shots every year. But that isn't the silver bullet this year. Like Tom, we're not out all the time, so that helps.

When I was pregnant with our youngest and the doctor asked if I wanted a flu shot and I was thinking about it he asked if I had ever had a reaction to eating eggs, when I told him that the last time I ate eggs (over easy) that I was almost immediately sick he said that I probably shouldn't get the shot then because they use something egg-like in the shot. But that was also about two and a half years ago.

I haven't got one in about 5 years and haven't gotten sick yet. (knock on wood.) Incidentally, this is why I don't get them.

Might want to do some reading on "Hugh Fudenberg" the "MD" quoted in that article:

                  http://www.casewatch.org/board/med/f...995order.shtml

He's the only who's come up with this supposed tie between the flu shot and alzheimer's, and he's a quack.

OMG. I'm not even going to comment on "Doctor Bob's" article. If you want to know the connection between aluminum, mercury, and Alzheimer's, look it up. There is none. If you're worried about mercury, lobby for cleaner coal fired electric plants that spew millions of tons of the stuff into the air every month.

And egg allergy is a contradiction to only 2 vaccines: Flu and yellow fever.

You beat me to it. "Doctor Bob" should know better. Maybe he's just too lazy to look things up. Or too stupid to know better. After all, his page advertises "At Home" tests for everything for those that like to waste their money.

I used Dr. Bob as an example cause he's the first hit on a google search. But plenty of other people seem to think there is a connection. I wouldn't dismiss the dangers so quickly. It just doens't seem worth it. Is Blaylock a quack too? http://w3.newsmax.com/blaylock/1.cfm

Aluminium compounds have been widely used as adjuvants in prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines. Dr. RK Gherardi's identification of macrophagic myofascitis, a condition causing profound weakness and multiple neurological syndromes, one of which closely resembled multiple sclerosis and Gulf War Syndrome. Both human studies and animal studies have shown a strong causal relationship to the aluminum hydroxide or aluminum phosphate used as a vaccine adjuvants.
I'm not going to get into the whole vaccine issue. Just cause nobody has proven a connection doesn't mean there isn't one. They said that about autism till one finally went to trial, then boom, it just so happens mercury can cause autism in "some" cases.

FWIW, I am also concerned about the coal plants.

Actually MilDoc, I took your advice and looked it up. First google hit said there may just be a connection with aluminum.

Many others said the same thing. hmmm.

WRONG! That case was a very very rare special situation in which the child had an inherited mitochondrial defect that the vaccines "may have" exaggerated. In fact, any severe illness would have had the same result. If the vaccine had anything to do with it it was not attributable to the thimerosal in the vaccine. Even the court said that.

                              Get your facts straight.

                                http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...d_Discovery_RA

RE: aluminum. You really should read your whole first Google "hit:"

" If anybody has played a important role in opposing the aluminum-Alzheimer's link, it's Dr. Henryk Wisniewsky. For the past 20 years Wisniewsky has been one of the most prominent scientists in the field of Alzheimer's research, and he's a vocal critic of the link theory. He's published over 600 academic articles and he's a key organizer of major international conferences on the disease. It's at conferences like these that he challenges the link between aluminum and Alzheimer's, based on the fact that, so far, all the evidence pointing to a link has been inconclusive."

This kind of garbage gets a life of its own thanks to the internet. there are many, many folks who disagree with both the above. There once was a "theory" that aluminum in cooking pots contributed to dementia, too.

If you want my humble opinion:

                                1. studies show the average adult has over 200 circulating man-made chemicals in their blood.
                                2. A recent CDC investigation showed that newborns have the same level of chemicals in their blood, picked up from mom.
                                3. Now, try, just try, separating the effects of our totally man-made toxic environment from anything else. It's impossible since we are all exposed.
                                4. Maybe, just maybe, the toxic world we live in plays a much larger role in everything than we expect.

There is simply no way to "protect" yourself in this world. Unless you raise your own food on uncontaminated land, get rid of plastics, fire proofing, chemicals, man made stuff, etc. Good luck.
