Cracker, he is a LEO. They do carry extra gear in their vehicles. The old shotgun rack in the front seat has mutated to keeping weapons out of sight. Someone can unlock your house with a crowbar too. Do you have your gun locked in a fireproof steel safe?Comment

No, Mike, but it is well hidden. So well in fact that it has survived two break-ins. None of my many weapons was found, in spite of the fact that I am never more than three steps from at least one of them. One of the thieves found that out firsthand as he returned the next day for another load when he thought I wasn't home. He ended up flat on his back with a .357 jammed down his throat. In spite of the fact that the squad did not arrive for nearly 20 minutes, I had his undivided attention, and he did not twitch a muscle. (Peed himself, too!)Comment

Unfortunately, I wasn't home on the last break in. They got a 6' stainless 357 S&W, Tec-22 Scorpion, and a KG9. I thought they were well hidden too. Got all my stereo stuff, which were all Marantz high end components, but the speakers were too big to get out the window. Wish I was at home at the time.

C-Man, I've got false bottoms, trap doors, and hidden holsters built into much of my furniture and permanent fixtures. James Bond would be jealous. The detectives who investigated the break-ins certainly were. I sometimes get a kick out of standing selected guests up and showing them the hardware they've been sitting on. Having a wood shop does come in handy sometimes.

When I was drafted in '69 went to Ft Lewis, WA for basic we fired old over the hill M-14s that the barrels were so shot out that hardly anyone could qualify Expert. It wasn't until I was sent overseas that I ever fired a M-16. We used M-16A1E1s which could fire fully automatic. Later on after I was discharged that the M-16 was changed to a 3 shot burst. I managed to fire Expert. Nice rifle. No good deed goes unpunishedComment

I agree with previous post on how addicting new toys can be! I converted a ruger 10/22 with nice bull barell and can shoot the staples off target at 50yrds. Very fun indeed!
Just spend your cash on what can really make the difference.....good ammo!

I was also going to mention how much fun and cheap a ruger 10/22 is to shoot. I've shot the M-16 a bit in the service. neat rifle but I'm not interested in owning one. I have an SKS that is fun and cheap to shoot.Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas EdisonComment

Have fired an AR15 many times they are very fun to shoot but that is as far as it goes for me.
When it comes to varmint hunting it is a 17 caliber for shots up to 250yds and a 204 ruger for those up to 500yds could take a fly off the top of a hogs head with either.
I only use a single shot for this because I always figured it was more fair. If i can't hit the target in one shot i shouldn't be shooting at it.Phil In Ohio

I've fired a M-16 even got to try a grenade launcher. Nice enough for combat but I prefer larger caliber for self defense in both rifles and pistols. I have a FN FAL the 308 round is a more effective round if you don't mind a little kick. I have my plinking guns too. I collect antique 22 bolt action rifles. I've got a nice S&W 22 pistol set up with a red dot site for target shooting. Then there's my Marlin .177 HMR with a BSA Sweet scope for driving tacks out to 300 yds.
As for safes I have 2. The first is for pistols, the second for rifles and extra ammo.
If I'm not home all firearm are locked up, and an alarm system and 2 very protective dogs take care of the property.Last edited by maxparot; 12-09-2007, 11:40 PM.Comment

I knew what JeffW did for a living from talking to him before, but need to caution the rest of you on his set-up. Civilians cannot have the 14.5" barrel unless they have paid the $200 tax stamp, gotten local approval and BATF approval. I am in the early stages of having my AR-15 converted to a SBR (short barrel rifle).
I have several "assault rifles" the AR-15, AK-47 (both semi-auto) and an Enfield bolt action .303 (WWII assault rifle). The are fun to shoot, but I have grown addicted to shooting flintlock rifles, pistols and shotguns. If I want something to really shake the ground, I roll out my 1750 replica 1 pounder cannon.George AKA Rounder

Got an AR, converted to a CAR 15, still considered legal as the flash hider is longer and silver sodered to the barrel.
I was able to get my hands on an original .22 conversion unit, nade by the same company that invented the Mac 10. It lets me have a great time for little money and always creates weird looks in an indoor range.
I still prefer the Swedish K that I used in SE Asia.

I personally own a Rock River Arms 20" A3 and love it. I put it together for under $800, but that was about 5 years ago. Groups under an inch at 100 yards with lake city M855 surplus.
I also have plenty of experience with the M16 and M4 varients. Very reliable when reasonably maintained. Carried an M4 for a year in Iraq with no malfunctions. Kept it lubed with Militec instead of CLP. I could run it dry with militech which kept the sand from gumming up the action. I wish I could say the same for the M9 beretta, but the open top slide design kept the action full of sand no matter what I did.Comment

So you got to try a rat rifle! Now you want one. Been there done that but still have not bought one. If I were in your shoes and could spare the cash I'd buy one. The AR has become the tool of choice for the game of High Power shooting. As such the possiblities for aftermarket upgrades is about endless. This platform can be made to shoot tiny groups at extreme distances. I've a former contractor that uses one for pest control all over my side of the state. He is so good with his that he gets asked by landowners who simply do not let anyone hunt. His choice ammo is milsurp. He sys it is plent accurate for minute of 'yote out to 400 yards.
The shooting habit could easily occupy all of your free time. IMHO there are much worse things you could be doing.Donate to my Tour de Cure

Hey Mark, or anyone else if Mark opts out.
I still have all that empty brass in .45 and .223. You still interested, just pick up the postage.
