    CO2 pellet guns?

Is it possible that a CO2 pellet gun (pistol) could deter a home intruder?

I've been told by someone that I've been told knows a thing or two about guns that some CO2 pellet guns are about as "powerful" as a 22. Right? Wrong?

If right, is a 22 enough to stop someone from advancing?

i did some research on pellet guns a while back for "pest control" and found that pellets between mass and velocity have something like 0.1 and 0.2 of the energy of a .22 LR. A Co2 pellet pistol will have a velocity of around 400-500 fps, about 1/2 the velocity of a pump pellet rifle... the pistol is at the low end of the scale for pellet power.

It really doesn't have the stopping power of of a real firearm. If you wave it at an unarmed burglar then you might scare him off. If you shoot him, unless you are really lucky, you'll just piss him off. If he has a gun, whether or not you shoot him you will probably end up shot or dead.

Even a .22 firearm is considered lightweight for stopping power.

Loring, is absolutely correct. Mass and velocity of 22 is substantially greater than a Co2 pellet gun which is grossly inferior to a pump pellet rifle. I've been shot by pump pellet and Co2 pellet guns as a kid. Can't say which one hurt the most, though others tended to believe the pump pellet hurt the worst. So no, it is not effective. Even a 22 is not effective! But it is possible that this will be effective . . . . even without the quarter sawn white oak!

A 22 short pistol vs. a very high power 22. air rifle would be close in muzzle energy but the air rifle would be much more accurate. I wouldn't want to need to rely on either to stop an intruder. Further using any gun to deter it a very bad practice. If you need a gun you need to be prepared to shoot to kill. I'll go one step further and say that before you consider keeping a firearm in your home make the decision to kill anyone that poses a real threat to your life or the life of your loved ones. If you don't need to make that decision at that moment it may save your life.
Having said that I hope you never need to pull a trigger but I do believe in 2nd ammendment rights and am nearly always armed myself.

Too many "ifs" in a .22 game.

              .22 v .45 = .22 loser

              .22 v .357 = .22 loser

The reason .22 loses is because you can unload 6 rounds into the guy with the .45 all the while he slides one off that ends you. He lives you die.

Max is right. You have to have the mind set that when you are faced with immediate danger you will shot that person. Like Max I am usually armed myself. When I am in South Philly or sections of DC or MD I usually have my hand inside my bag at all times until I am in a secure location. It sucks but I know that I will live if confronted.

Possibly, but only if you flash the firearm and talk a big game about the "high powred rifle" that you're about to go to business with.

The best way to deter a home intruder is racking a 12 guage pump. This can be heard through the entire house on a quiet night. I guarantee that any intruder with even the slightest bit of self preservation will slowly back out the same door he made in entrance. Maybe even clean any mess that was made by his intrusion.

If he doesn't back out, then you're dealing with an altogether differnet animal that needs to be destroyed like a rabid curr. And you'l lbe better well suited with the 12 at that point.

                    For what it's worth.

                    Regards,
                    -Dan

If I did a shotgun I'd need one my wife could handle, too. She is 5'2, 110 pounds. I think a 12 gauge would be a lot for her to handle, no? How about a smaller shotgun? And what is the minimum length (without sawing it off, of course).

If you are not averse to having a gun on your property, then I would suggest you and wifey head to a good gun store in your area. I would not suggest buying one at Walmart. You are correct that a 12 gauge would likely be too much recoil for someone of that size. A 20 gauge with the proper load would be just as effective at such a short range. And while loading up the chamber of a pump shot gun has great ambience, not sure if a pump would be the ideal gun for an encounter.

Disclaimer: I know very little about guns. I know a lot about the one in the photo I posted but am not a gun nut in general. That is why I recommend a good gun shop.

My thoughts on home protection is keep 'em out to begin with. We have 2 large German Shepherds that do a great job as a EWS (early warning system). But if you don't have dogs, or an alarm of some kind and want to arm yourself for your home, absolutely, a 12 ga is the way to go. Don't think you can fire it Chuck Conners style (The Rifleman), as you'll probably get your arm torn off.

A 22 cal has more velocity than most larger caliber firearms, but just doesn't have the stopping power. I have a 22 cal revolver 9 shot, but in the middle of the night, if needed, out comes my favorite, the 357.

The main bit of advice I can give, if you are planning on having any sort of firearm in the house, be dang sure you are properly trained and comfortable with every aspect of said firearm. Pellet gun, 44 mag, shotgun, whatever.

There are ranges across the country that offer classes and expert advice. Trust me, anything these guys (and gals) can tell you is worth a mountain if gold.

Store it in a place where you are able to utilize it at a moment's notice, even at 3am. And train your children (and other adults) in the house to keep their hands off. And in some cases, to keep their mouths shut about it.

Keep plenty of ammo in the house as well. No sense in having a firearm if you're not going to load it at some point.

Also, I will add that you better be dang sure you can kill someone if you pull it. If you don't think you can kill someone who is advancing, don't pull out a gun unless death by gunshot is your preferred way to exit this life.

Also, if you kill someone, even if justifiable, make sure you are prepared for some legal ramifications. You may or may not face criminal charges, but in this day and age you stand a decent chance of being sued by the perp's family.
