    Accurate digital bathroom scales?

My old analog (looks like a clock) bathroom scale finally reached a 'too unreliable to ignore' stage, so bought a bathroom scale (Health-O-Meter) from Walmart for $20.

Thing is, it shows a variation of almost 5 pounds for my weight - taken at 8 am in the morning and then again at 11am. The pamphlet did say there might be a small variation, but this is not small . The whole idea was to start getting into a health mode for the entire family, with my 8 year old at around 90%-ile weight. But this scale won't do at all.

So is it a case of 'what you pay for'? Maybe I should go for costlier? Any recommendations?

I did see this one at Costco . Check out it's claim :
    "Capacity & Measurement
The ProFIT™ UC-321 has a maximum capacity of 350 pounds. It measures weight to the tenth of a pound. The scale is so accurate that you can weigh yourself, get off the scale and drink a glass of water, weigh yourself again and actually see the difference immediately
    "

Wow! But for $89, that might as well be true. But isn't there a middle ground in cost?

Tanita scales are also supposed to be pretty good. Weight Watchers uses them for weighing their members, but the ones WW uses are real spendy doctor's office units. I have read that even the lower-end units are pretty decent.

Most of the low-end scales I've seen (tried) at Wal-Mart and Target have been junk.

Tanitas are hard to find locally.

If you haven't had the scale for long, you should take it back. I have a Health-O-Meter scale from K-Mart, about 6 or 8 months ago. It's not digital, but it seems very reliable. Every so often, it needs to be zeroed in before weighing, but that's to be expected.

For most people I know that's not a valid way to test the accurcy of scales. There were times in my life when my weight could vary 10 lbs (+/- 4%) over the course of a day. The only useful measurement to guage weight loss or gain for me was to weigh in first thing in the morning after the first pee. Oh yeah and make sure I was well hydrated when I go to bed.

Does it vary if you step on and off a few times? Take it back if it does. If you think it varies over the day then weigh some object other than yourself.

Any scale I try seems to indicate my weight is too high. Doesn't anybody make an accurate scale anymore.......
