    Not a good day.

Well, The boss man called me into his office today and let me go.

Had a rough month money wise in May and Corporate was on him to make cuts. I don't add to revenue, so out I go.

Guess this means I'll have more time to work on some projects for a bit.

Already broke the news to LOML and put in a call to one of my headhunters.

Early in my career, when I lived and worked in a boom-town environment, I got laid off a lot. Without exception, and as tough as it was in the short run, every instance led to a bigger and better opportunity in the long run. Here's hoping the same thing will happen with you.

Sorry to hear about your luck. Try to turn it into your advantage. Get the shop organized, cleaned out, work on old projects you have been putting off. There are projects (non wood working) that can be done that don't cost much, like painting a room. The work will help keep your mind off of other things.

Lots of luck in finding a new job!!

+1 on Loring, Larry and Ric's comments - it is a gut punch, but you will find something better. Enjoy some brief project time and good luck in your search!

You can add to revenue, AND/OR you can be a cost effective way of saving the company money (they loose productivity because they don't pay someone to do what you do, aka make their life simpler). They always seem to forget that.

Good luck with the Job search, have fun with the projects (aka don't stress out). The only thing I really hope, is you have a wood stash (so the spouse doesn't cut off that part of the budget).

That is always a tough situation. But as others have said, look at it as an opportunity (easier for us to say than for you to hear). There is a lot of truth to it however, and I'm sure you will find something suitable in time. Working on projects that have been waiting a while is a good way to keep your mind off of the stress related to losing your job.

The same thing happened to my younger brother in April. He lives in an area where it is difficult to find another job, especially at the wage he was making so he's having a hard time finding another position. He's very upbeat about it and isn't letting it get him down. Good things come to good people.

That rubbish about not adding to the revenue stream is probably not accurate. Just measured in the wrong way. Best of luck in your job search. Good, hardworking folks are in demand.

I have noticed this also. And the last time, I started my own business. That was 14 years ago, and I have never looked back. You'll be OK.

Mike, I am sorry to hear about your losing your job. The company I work for had a time a few years ago that we sent a few employees to the chopping block and that was one of the toughest things I ever had to do in my life. One of them was a really good friend of mine and he landed on his feet and found an even better job so I hope you have the same outcome.

Well if they're making cost-saving rather than revenue-generating moves, then I'd say they did you a favor by cutting you free. You'll be fine.

                          Mike,

I found myself in the same place about six weeks ago. Usually, when this happens to me (unfortunetly I have more than my share) I panic and grab the first job that comes my way. This time I took my time and did some soul searching before I really started looking. My soon to be new job actually found me. I didn't make the first call. I will start work in September and with a lot of hard work and the God helping me out I might actually have found my niche.

Hang in there things will get better.

Mike, maybe it's a sign you should be in the penmaking business...and with the unemployment as a subsidy for the beginning. You'll do fine, whatever happens.
