Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that! -Rocky Balboa-
Woodworking is both a creative outlet and most importantly a Stress release for me. $1m ain't worth the loss of those.
Same for me! Plus, I am quite persnickety about house and furniture repairs. It would drive me insane watching even some "professional" do inadequate work. I would trust "cabinetman" for sure but there ain't that many people around my home town, and none with much common sense and skill.
I would "lose" the million dollars rather quickly as I would have to pick up a board and show how it should be done!
I sure could use the money and I love to travel, but it didn't take me but about 5 seconds to realize that I couldn't stay away from wood in some form or fashion.
There are 4 things that I do value more than woodworking, and these values in descending order are:
1. The purpose of my current work
2. Family
3. Friends
4. Personal freedom
5. Woodworking
6. A.B.C. (all equal): Money, other hobbies, travel,
Even below number 4, I don't think I could give up "travel" for a million dollars. I view that as "buying out" my personal freedom and choice. My personal freedom and choice is more valuable to me than money or volumes of money.
ANOTHER question would be: What do you value the most? But that is for another post.

Yea, I would give it up. I'm just really starting in this hobby so it would be easy to give up. I have/had several other hobbies that I can spend more time on. Now ask me in say 5 or 10 years and it might be different. Decided to take up wood working to help with the stress. Also as Larry said to help with some extra income down the road.
For those that didn't vote "show me the money".. I betcha that if you did show them a nice, crisp, green million, they would change their vote in a heart-beat. Just my opinion based on the fact after reading post here for awhile... most here have varied interest outside a wood-shop.
But after 36 years.. show me the money! ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..
In a heart beat. I sure am enjoying this woodworking hobby but boy for a million bucks - oh yeah! I would love to travel for the rest of my life and I could sure see some sights with one million.
May you die and go to heaven before the Devil knows you're dead. My Best, Mac
Thanks for the leap of faith Hank, but I don't have a current passport.
.
Hey, You don't need a passport for Mississippi. Yep, I am in Japan and will be for about 3 to 4 more years but after that . . back in MS. And you do great work!

Sarge,
Even if I "said" I would give up wood working to get the million, I know that I couldn't stay away from it. It would be a lie to say that I would!
Shucks, I just found out that I am highly allergic to the fumes and sanding dust for cyanoacrylate finish on pens. I started developing flu like symptoms and getting double vision. My solution: Bought a Triton powered respirator.
SO it boils down to: making pens the way I want to - makes me sick and gives me double vision, but I found a way to do it.
NOPE - to be honest, money is not what I value the most! I realize that some people can NOT comprehend this but some people's primary value system (and mine) is not money!
