OK guys, here's the answer. It is a marker for the Westside Highway in New York. So, it is a sign. It's a sign like you might see at a state park done in wood or whatever. The design on the front is a big "W". Anyone who was in New York, or rode on that highway probably saw one of these. I thought with all the New Yorkers here it would be guessed quickly. Thank you for participating.

I vote that we limit these things to tools or something related to woodworking.

This thing applies to niether group and I've only been on I95 through NY. I could put up some things that would likely take you forever and a day to guess, but then the connection wouldn't be there for most people.

You may have a valid point. This type of thread generates a lot of interest and interaction. I considered the actual piece in the picture as relatively unimportant that it was in New York. What got my interest was the obscurity of the piece and how it could be so many things. I also considered the New Yorkers in the group who may have known right off.

Not all posts in "Around the coffee pot" are woodworking related. The diversity of an off topic forum offers a wide range of entertainment, from jokes, medical problems, and daily life scenarios. The interaction of members display a sense of community even by seeing what others post and getting to know others in different situations. Posts of this nature IMHO can be just plain fun.

I respect and value your input and I'm open to any discussion or suggestions.

If it's not going to be linited to tools or woodworking--which IMO would be more fun, anyway--then there's got to be some kind of universe-limiting yes/no type questioning allowed ("is it related to transportation?") which would get complex and cumberome.

It's not as if there aren't plenty of hard-to-identify tools out there.


PS: "Tools" should probably not include things that are so specialized you've got to have climbed Everest or fixed a roof in Antarctica or patched a gear assembly in the Marianna Trench to recognize.

My feelings exactly. I'm sure you could show some old tools that people like me have never even seen before, heard of, or no clue how to use it.

I also feel a little more tips if the guessing goes in the right direction would help things.

I have never seen or heard of it before. Not sure how many people here would have know what it is. Obviously Thom knew exactly what it was, he even found a link to one within 3 minutes of the post.

I agree with you on the fun thing Bill. I don't like limits either. From the continued responses to this thread it became a creative outlet, and a representation of member interest.

When I stated the so called "rules", I would have accepted a variety of answers, such as, logo, sign, identifying marker, or a representative facsimile. It was very interesting to hear how people see things differently.

As for an "unrelated" object, there are many new members who posted to this that may not have posted to a woodworking subject as they may be intimidated by their lack of knowledge, or being new to the craft. It may have given them an incentive to get into the posting scenario. Just to "join in" and be part of a group. This is evident in the "Song Game" of new members posting. I have read several replies from new members on other posts that start off like "I'm new here and have been lurking for quite a while".

I think the "fun part" was the variety of guesses and the comments that accompanied. I got a charge out of reading the ongoing ideas, and looked forward to the next one. I compliment our members for keeping our "Around the coffee pot" a friendly and interesting forum. I've been to other forums that have "off topic" sections that become very hostile and critical.

So, as it's said, you can't please everybody all the time.

Today we waste materials (ie so many items are disposable that really shouldn't be).

In yesteryear, we wasted labor (such an intricate design that really didn't aid discernment - in fact likely impeded discernment).

I'll give cabinetman a high grade for uniqueness - never seen nuthin' like that.

Never been anywhere CLOSE to NY. Didn't have a clue and wouldn't. Barely been out of my state (and I do mean barely), and haven't been on a vacation since either 81 or 83 (don't remember the year).

On something like this, I think he should have given a region clue first, so those of us that haven't been, wouldn't have tried.
