    Musings

We went on a mini vacation last week to St Louis. We went up the old highway US67 to Poplar Bluff, where this small town of 15,000 has a waterpark that GrandDaughters like. The next day on to St Louis and the Zoo and Grants Farm.

As We traveled the old road, I looked at the closed service stations and the prices posted and tried to set a timeframe for when they closed. We left Arkansas with gas at $2.71, as We headed North prices rose for awhile and then came down to $2.84 outside St Louis. On the way I saw closed up stations and convenience stores with prices of $1.31, $1.79, $2.01, $2.65, and many others. I even saw one that was under a $1.00 but didn't figure that would be believed.

Last month for the 1st time Our gas prices broke $3.00, luckily We don't use much gas around Home. My mind is still traveling. Bill

I've been to a few of the museum type collections that some car guys have. They have all kinds of nostalgia, including gas pumps from the past. Several of them had prices under 20 cents/gal. I don't know if they set them that way, but I can remember prices that low.

I remember in my teens that gas was below a quarter a gallon. My father, who drove 100K miles/year for his work, used to complain that it cost him more than $5.00 to fill up his Chrysler.

I remember in 1961, We had moved to Houston. SHortly after I sort of became aware of gas prices... maybe because that's when my mother started driving (and I'd be in the car when we got gas). Anyway, I vividly recall the Gulf station at HillCroft and Westheimer (where there's now CVS store) having signs for 19.9 cents per gallon.

this web page give historical prices of gasoline by region, grade, etc. back a few years.
