I bought a Dyson Animal several months ago, after having gone through several other brands of vacuums. I can honestly say that the Dyson was money well spent. I have always had at least one German Shepherd Dog in the house at any given time, and this vacuum does wonders with animal hair. Works great on any surface, easy to empty, and zero breakdowns. Still works as well as the first day I got it.
It is a bit pricey, but after being disgusted with so many other vacuums it seems like a bargain to me!Comment

We bought the Dyson (yellow) about 6 months ago.
I was VERY hesitant to spend $400 (Target gave a $100 gift card) on the thing.
After its first use vacuuming my den, which was vacuumed the day before with a Hoover canister vac, I was SHOCKED! I could not believe the dirt it was picking up.
I love it.
It works great. You can actually see the dirt it is picking up.
It is so easy to empty. No bags.
I'd buy one again.ErikComment

We have 3 Alaskan Malamutes and a cat living in the house with us. The Dyson practically payed for itself just by not having to buy bags. It cleans a lot better than our previous vac, a top rated Hoover. I was concerned about dust when emptying it, but it is not an issue. We'd buy it again in a heart beat! When we bought it the only difference between the yellow and the purple was an extra upholstery brush. We passed on that as we have leather.Comment

Well took the LOML down to Lowes today and picked up the Animal DC17. Took it home and put it together and fired it up. It's pretty slick and provided it all plastic except the extension handle it seems very well made. The plastic is a little different than what you'd find on brands like the Hoover, a little more durable if you will. Read some of the info on it and apparently the technology was presented to Hoover, who laughed at Dyson and said bags were better and they weren't about to drop a $500 million a year business selling bags for a bagless vac.
Dyson financed it and patented the technology himself and is doing well on his own.
We got a Lab and a Aussie Shepard, I thought the Lab shedded a lot, good lord I am surprised the Aussie has any hair left given all that the Dyson picked up.
As far as the Kirby goes, I'd heard great things about them. People's grandparents handing them down and still working great. We didn't pay full price for it as a matter of fact the salesman messed up and did a demo for both my wife and I and one of the neighbors in the same house, both of us got the same deal at the 1/3 of the cost.
Worked great first, then it started chewing up the belts, melting them on the carpet and leaving the house smelling like burnt rubber. Took it in a few times and was told there was nothing wrong with it, two different maintenance places too. Bags filled up quickly. We have the Ultimate G.
