    Dyson?

Looks like the next major tool purchase is going to be a new vacuum cleaner for the house.

I bought the LOML a Kirby a couple of years ago and she hates it. She is really wanting a Dyson, which pales in comparison of the Kirby in price, but all the same when I see a $500 price tag, I see a new mortiser and some more shop goodies that can be bought w/ that $500 too.

Anyone got one? Are they worth it?

It will cost you a few bucks to view the results, but Consumer Reports just reviewed vacuums in November of last year. You can view the ratings here. They didn't rate the Dyson as well as everyone would expect so whatever you have to pay to view the reviews may offset the cost of getting a better vacuum for less.

        Hope this helps you out.

Ive had a Kirby Gen III forever. My parents bought it and used it a few years and gave it to us when we got married. Had it repaired a few times but its still going. The impeller got replaced twice I think because of sucking up bad stuff like coins. Eventually it will break when you suck stuff like that up. The repairs have always been pretty cheap. I guess thats good since they cost so much to buy. Its over 20 years old so i think whenever it actually goes bad i'll get another one.

We have the Purple animal version of the Dyson. It has been fine with no trouble and picks up dog hair real will. It is easy empty and to clean the filters. The only negative we have found and it is small, is the hose in the handle thing took awhile to figure it out, but every thing is fine now, just a little awkward to use at first. If you have animals the purple one is the one to get.

              Dyson

I bought one for LOML #2 for her last birthday present. It seems to work great and she is happy with it. But then again I can't go wrong with any vacuum, camera or household gadget as a present. At last count I think see has 3 upright vacuums, one roomba and 5 various cameras. And on top of that she loves sports. I'm a lucky man but a little broke.

We have the basic yellow Dyson and love it. I have to agree with Tom about the hose, but after you put it together for the first time, it becomes intuitive. The illustrated instructions in the manual are very clear.

Cleaning out the dust bin is a 5-second task. After changing bags on our Hoover for almost 9 years, this was a welcome feature!

Performance is excellent (please note that it's a very subjective comment). With hardwood floors throughout the house, our cleaning requirements are very straightforward.

Other that Googling for negative reviews, I didn't really do any research for this purchase. It looked good and easy to use: it met my primary criteria for a major tool purchase.

I bought a Dyson last year. We had 3 dogs at the time. It did a great job on dog hair, but we only have minimal carpeting in the form of an area rug. If we had a lot of wall to wall carpeting, it might have been a different story, but we didn't, so I took it back for a refund after trying it out for a few days. I just couldn't justify the price. I bought a different one from Sears that fills our needs for much less.

Both of my bosses have pets. One has at least 5 BIG dogs (lives in the country and favorite charity is animal adoption groups), and the second one ended up with the step kids cats. Both LOVE their Dysons. The hose did take a few minutes to figure out, and I wasn't sure about it being plastic (I was there when #2 first assembled), but they both NOW think it was money well spent.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

If I did that I'd get a smack

Seriously though, Dyson invented the bagless vacuum. I couldn't believe it took so long for them to establish a presence over here especially when I was seeing everyone else come out with clones.

We have a local vacuum store that sells miele, panasonic etc etc and looking at their prices I think the dyson is a pretty good bargain.

It's hard to believe you would change from a Kirby to a Dyson. There may be something wrong with it if you are unhappy with it's performance. I sold Kirbys to pay my way to college back in the early sixties and even then there was no comparison to any other machine, I can remember growing up our family had a Kirby, two aunts had one, it was just rampant.

I still have one from the period that I was selling them and have only had one repair made on the gasket to the empty tray. It gets used regularly.

For cleaning carpet as an upright, IMO the Kirby has it won hands down. For cleaning as a cannister (with a hose) it's not bad. The standard hoses can only move about 32 cu.ft/min, in most all machines. I'm not familiar with the Dyson, but what kills most vacuums is the air that picks up the dirt is usually the same air that cools the motor. Not with Kirby.

In fact if anyone is interested, I'll stop over when you and the wife are home and show you how effective a machine it really is. In fact you are very lucky, for a limited time I am giving away a choice of either a set of steak knives or a 12 pc glassware set with oversized tumblers.

Did they happen to review the Hoover Fusion U5180900 Vacuum? I have heard that this thing is awesome and it's around $100.
