    A (long) Kirby Christmas story.

At our age, it’s difficult to find presents that will be a surprise. Also, in our case, there’s nothing we “need”, so it gets down to something extravagant.

Had this great idea for a present for LOML – NOT

I don’t do much driving any more (work from home), but she is out and about often – on Quilting business – often to new locations. So I thought (first mistake), she would love a GPS (second mistake).

Did my research (you guys helped), found a good price and rushed out and bought it (third mistake). Cost about 3 x BT3100’s

This is where it hits the fan…

Told LOML she would never guess this year’s present – forgot about Google’s history list – I guess “Tom Tom” would have been hard to miss!

LOML: “I hope you’re not thinking of getting me a GPS – what a waste of money – I have enough problems with the PC” . Oops!

So I take back the item (unopened) and discover (you guessed it), they are happy to give me a credit but NO refund. This situation led to an “interesting” discussion at home – some un-ladylike words were used.

Now the story starts to get better…

LOML, in her infinite wisdom, says: “why don’t we both get new CD/Radios for our cars “. 10 year old cars - we had never bothered to upgrade from our cassette radios.

We both go back to the store (not making that mistake again), and discover we can do what we want (Pioneer MP3 - installed) – his and hers, and have $30 left over for blank CD’s.

I did ask the guy at the store if I would benefit from new speakers (yeah, I know), anyway, for $200 fitted, 4 new matching Pioneer speakers for me – LOML said she didn’t need them.

Oh, wow – we are both rediscovering the music we haven’t listened to for years. I’m learning a whole new world of stuff – WAV, MP3, WMA, “Ripping” etc., etc.

Went thru our CD’s and LP’s and 45’s and have “found” all the MP3 equivalents – amazing stuff – I’ve got 130 tracks on a CD and only used about ˝ it’s capacity! And the quality – I’m hearing instruments and sounds I never knew were even recorded back then. “Sparkling” is the only word I can think of, to describe the new sounds.

(Chuckle) Also had to replace my Shed Hi-Fi and LOML’s micro in her Quilt room for MP3 .

    Some observations:

NEVER think you can surprise LOYL!
She will ALWAYS have a better idea.
You may be pleased how things turn out.

Rod, it is a great honor to welcome you and Carol to the 21st century!

    That was a funny story!

Rod, glad it worked out for both of you. I'm in awe how you ended up with your own car stereo from the proceeds of her gift, but I'm guessing the two of you got things evened out.

It took 15 or 20 years of marriage (I probably should know the exact number) to teach my wife that no surprise is a good surprise when it comes to getting me a gift.

      Regards,
      Tom

Great story, Rod! Based on the title I was afraid we'd be hearing homicide induced by washing machine or (my family favorite) snow tires.

Good story. If they ever made a movie about it, it might replace "The Christmas Story" as number 1!

Glad it worked out so well. It is frustrating trying to find none necessary gifts.

Good going, nice recovery Rod. I gave up years ago trying to surprise her. Now for the big gifts I take her out for breakfast, and let her go pick out something she wants, but would not buy for her self. My only rule it has to be something that she would not normally buy (no underwear, clothes, shoes) and not at Walmart or Target but would like. I usually tell her how much I am willing to spend and she is real good about coming close. Hey she gets a good meal, and gets to drag me allover with her shopping (I hate to shop) we spend the whole day together and usually end up someplace nice for dinner. Oh Rod, she would love a GPS system. Our 41st anniversary is coming up in Feb. so we shall see. But I want my Jointer.

Good recovery. My 2005 Dodge Ram truck (a basic work truck) came with a cassette player! My Christmas gift was a new CD player for the truck. Now I just need time to let Besy Buy install it.

Very interesting statement, Loring. Could mean...

                          - how could he be so stupid?
                          - took him long enough to get with the music stuff.
                          - nice ending
                          - after 37 years of marriage you'd think he'd know
                          - well, he is coming up to his 65th

Of course, all of the above applies

                              Shock and awe.

First, how could she not love a GPS? I travel for work, and it is indispensible.

Second, Great story. Glad you are now part of the hip crowd! Now remember, no illegal downloading! I heard they have these great new gadgets called Ipods too- may be a good idea next year!
