I posted this question in another forum and got some very unique answers.
My first car was bought, with what seemed forever to save, with money from cutting grass. It was a 1951 Chevy 2dr sedan. It wasn't your ordinary Chevy 6 cyl Blue Flame. Back then Florida titles showed all previous owners. I paid $150.00 for this car that 7 people had owned. Along the way a very creative guy replaced the engine with a Chevy 265cid V8, with tripple two barrels, and a Duntov cam. The transmission was a LaSalle 3 speed floor shift truck trans. Then these cars were called "sleepers". It seems that along the ownership line a lot of the wiring under the hood was never removed when new stuff went in. There was probably enough to rewire two cars. Being in high school and having your own back seat was a real treat. The 2dr sedan had a huge rear seat that kind of swept around like a sofa, and was reupholstered in a smooth vinyl, with no ribs, tufts or anything. It was very easy to clean up. Kids in school from well to do families were driving '55 - '57 Fords and Chevy's. Those were the hot tickets. I can't remember how fast it was, but it sure beat a 3sp Raleigh.
