    What Was Your First Car?

I posted this question in another forum and got some very unique answers.
My first car was bought, with what seemed forever to save, with money from cutting grass. It was a 1951 Chevy 2dr sedan. It wasn't your ordinary Chevy 6 cyl Blue Flame. Back then Florida titles showed all previous owners. I paid $150.00 for this car that 7 people had owned. Along the way a very creative guy replaced the engine with a Chevy 265cid V8, with tripple two barrels, and a Duntov cam. The transmission was a LaSalle 3 speed floor shift truck trans. Then these cars were called "sleepers". It seems that along the ownership line a lot of the wiring under the hood was never removed when new stuff went in. There was probably enough to rewire two cars. Being in high school and having your own back seat was a real treat. The 2dr sedan had a huge rear seat that kind of swept around like a sofa, and was reupholstered in a smooth vinyl, with no ribs, tufts or anything. It was very easy to clean up. Kids in school from well to do families were driving '55 - '57 Fords and Chevy's. Those were the hot tickets. I can't remember how fast it was, but it sure beat a 3sp Raleigh.

My first car (well, actually, my mother's car) was a white 1956 Chrylser Imperial with a 456 (?) Hemi. It was called the 'spaceship' by all of my friends because of it's size ... it was definitely a 'guy' magnet ... unfortunately, their heads were always under the hood. LOL

Mine was a '79 Jeep Cherokee stuck in 4WD. It was great for piling in a bunch of friends - they all called it "School Bus No. 00" among other names I'm not allowed to share. It was my dad's old work truck.

Mine was a '54 Chevy Deluxe. Tricked out for its time in '61-'62. Like Cabinetman Blueflame 6, but automatic . Still... it would run good from a rolling 20. The scourge of the Westside of Jacksonville (LOL)!

But the chicks loved the Baby Blue!

I didn't get my own car until I graduated high school. It was a 1957 Ford Fairlane Sunliner Convertable. I got it in 1962, it was a great car, I was stationed in South Carolina, and while I was on a TDY in Vietnam, My vehicle ID expired and the Air Force had it towed away. I never did find it. Bill

              Remember it well...

1933 Dodge sedan, had "Free Wheeling", ran like a charm, and looked like the type Dillinger rode around in...

Bought it for $25 cash... bought from weekend yard work earnings at 50 cents per hour... Guessing in or about 1952 or 1953...

              Fun car!

I don't ever remember anything about insurance... maybe my Mom took care of it... ??

I didn't have a care in the world!

OK, almost the same reply as before... changed it a little...

!946 Dodge Sedan with a 1950 Plymouth engine (Straight 6) and Automatic Tranny.
I drove it for several years, about 4 years as I recall, then bought a 1957 Lloyd Station Wagon (New) in 1957 for $1500. It got about 45 MPG with a top end of 65 MPH. I drove it from Dayton Ohio to Detroit Michigan on $1.86 worth of Gas.

                  land cruiser...

                  '76 Buick Electra - forest green with a tan top and a 455 4-barrel.

It was about 50 feet long and had a back seat big enough for two couples

                  8-track player, of course.

1957 Chevy BelAir 2-tone, modified with a Hurst 4-on-the-floor shifter. Loved it!

There was one for sale here in Copperas Cove, fully restored, for $10K a few years ago. LOML vetoed my buying it -- stick shift, no AC!

I bought my first car in 1952 a 1937 Dodge 2 dr convertable with a rumble seat. It was a fun car but had continuous brake problems.

And for something a little more recent. My first car was an '83 Plymouth Turismo Hatchback. Before I got it someone had taken it over a curb and blown the front suspension and ripped out the oil pan.

The suspension was replaced with the rear springs from a heavier car so my car had the front end higher than the rear. I added window weights (the old school iron sausages) to weight the front down so it didn't hydroplane. The replacement engine was a Peugot that was even smaller and wimpier than the original. If it made over 100HP it wasn't much more than that.

I drove that thing literally into the ground. When I sold it the heater didn't work, it burned oil, radio was shot and the alternator wasn't charging the battery. I replaced it with a Ford Ranger and I wish I still had that truck.
