I got a Schocker in the mail today

The mail man came to the door and rang the bell, I answered and he had me sign a certified mail card. I looked at the return addrerss and it was from my mortgage company. I sat down at my desk and opened it, the thing that first caught my eye was the title "Notice of Intent to Forclose". That's enough to scare the crap out of you. I read through it and it seems that I was notified about a year ago that my loan was in default, never saw that one.

Next step was to fix a good strong drink and read it again. It still said the same thing. I called them and it seemed like I was on hold forever. By the time I got a person to talk to I was on my second drink and had calmed down a bit. While on hold I read the letter again and my address looked strange, it was addressed to the Estate of Richard Peterson.

The person I was able to talk to pulled up my account and informed me that I was listed as deceased, news to me. My mortgage does have a pay off stipulation if I go to the big shop upstairs.

The person I needed to talk to was out of the office so it looks like tomorrow will be a phone tag day.

It's hard to believe that I have been dead for a year and didn't know it. Where do they get informantion like this?

If you want my opinion, you look great for a dead guy!

Hope you don't have too much trouble clearing this one up.

So.....if they think you're dead, and your mortgage has a payoff if you're dead, why are they after your estate wanting to foreclose? It should have been paid off in full a year ago. This could be the best thing that ever happened to you. LOL!

Tell them to contact the mail service and ask who signed for the letter.

Wouldn't you know if you were in default for a year? I know my bank account would be rather full. Or my shop would be...

My condolences on your passing, Dick. Where should I send the flowers?

Actually, you're never really dead as long as you still get mail. My father has been gone since '82, and I still get mail for him all the time. Ain't computers wonderful??

My father passed away over 10 years ago. Last year I found out that I was mixed up with him on the three credit companies and listed as deceased. I called my credit union because my local banker (who I went to high school with) was not much help. I was given a step by step instruction from the CU on how to undo the mess. It worked and everything is OK now. The credit union person did say that it might re-occur later, so keep copies of everything and be prepared to do the paper work again.

I am a junior and that is part of the reason for our mix up. The other part is that I listed my mom and dad's address for our passport and visa information while in Japan.

I suppose that if someone in the same county had the same name as you, the information could have been mixed up. They do not look directly at SS numbers or other information as much as they do names. But SS numbers are required to straighten the mess out with the national credit centers. You can bet that your mortage company has reported you as deceased to the national credit center of their choice, so you will probably have to go through the deal of straightening everything out with them as well.

The value of an artist's work goes up after he dies. New pieces made since your passing should be worth a mint!

It would be funny if weren't so pathetic. I 've always had problems with the credit bureaus making money from information about me, and should it be wrong, its my fault, and my responsibility to fix it, and I get screwed if I miss it.

Just make sure it is YOUR mortgage company and that you aren't providing important identity information to someone that is going to empty your bank accounts!

Reminds me about the old joke, where the artist gets news that the gallery sold all his paintings, on the reasoning that they go up when you die. His doctor bought them.

I would be at the bank getting copies of my canceled checks (showing my mortgage payments since you "died", and have my attorney ask why they accepted them and failed to apply your deceased clause (while your sitting, decomposing,(eat lot's of beans and cabbage for the outgassing effect) in the bank presidents chair). You might consider changing banks, as since your deceased, you accounts are frozen.
