    Open segmented

This is an interestng item to make and in some areas it presented me with a challenge.

It measures 4 inches high, 4.5 inches in diameter and is made from Eastern Canadian maple and Australian jarrah.

Nice work! The segmented stuff is too intricate for me, particularly since I'm patience-deficient, but I like the look of it when somebody else does it.

That does look great! I will take it off of your hands!

IS this your first open segment? Looks like it was done with some experience behind it!

There's gonna be nightmares by some of the turners on here imagining the problems turning, and glueing, something with all those open spaces!

          Interesting as well as beautiful!

How exactly did you accomplish that (I know almost nothing about turning)? It looks awesome.

Take a look at this website for information how to make open segmented vessels.

                  C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Making an open-segment bowl.mht

It requires that you make a jig first along with some form of reliable indexing system. After that it's a matter of patience! The item is turned after about three layers are glued, then the next three, and so on.

The individual pieces were cut then sanded very lightly by hand to remove any bits that would affect the glued surface; other than that it's fairly straight forward and very satisfying.

Attached is another of my vessels which contains 157 pieces and made from walnut and maple.

The previous open segented URL didn't work; try this one.
