won't be turning for a while

was working on a spindle in the shop last night when it happened.

    Catch....Bang.

broke the tool rest right at the joint where the rest meets the post. I'm now out of commission until I can get a replacement.

PSI is out of stock of their 3 piece set.

I don't like the looks of the welded ones.

Someone recommended getting a piece of bar stock the same diameter as the post and having a 90 degree bend put in it. He turns bowls on one (although heftier than my 5/8th inch I'm sure) that are larger than the tires on my jeep. http://www.koawoodhawaii.com/3.html (first pic in the fifth row). I like the idea as I can have a 9 inch bar bent so that I could use it either way as a 6 inch or 3 inch (excluding the bend)

Turning something that big is absolutely scary. Wonder what the speed is on the Lathe and how big is the Lathe. Wonder what the tools look like.

Assuming that the blank is 36 inches in diameter (the 56 inch max is too scary to think about) the RPM would be multiplied by 113 compared to a 1 inch diameter spindle. So 200 rpm for 1 inch would be 2200 inches per minute on that outside edge.....

          :whoa:

I can turn in turn a piece in excess of 54" on the 'Frankenstein" lathe -- I haven't found a decent piece of wood that large or an extension cord long enought so that I can get the house and the shop out of the "line of fire" if something goes arwy.
