A pen and 5 duck calls

Here is the pen I am most proud of to date. It started with a beautiful Amboyna burl blank, but an out of round bushing caused an end to be messed up. This happened several months ago. Today, I turned about 5/16 inch off, added a brass ring and black persimmon (Japan). This one is mine! But it is nicely finished enough with the right color to sell for $100 or more, IMHO!

Here are 5 duck calls that will be going to my grandson, grand daughter and son in law. ON the left is Macassar Ebony, then Cocobolo, the Zebra Wood previously posted, and a Purple Heart for my grand daughter.

In front is a call made from a moose horn that I acquired in Alaska last year. My grandson was with me and LOML in our tour of Anchorage, Fairbanks, Valdez and points in between. This one is for him also. SIL gets the Cocobolo as was his request.

The gloss makes them a little difficult to see the real colors well, but I am not a great photographer.

Hank, I'm about to get into pen turning. Where did you get the kit for that one? I love the overall look (and yours is a beautiful example.)

That is called: "Sierra Black Titanium & Titanium Gold Pen Kit". I got this one from Beartooth Woods at:
      http://www.beartoothwoods.com/catalo...hp?cPath=21_23

You can also get them at:
      http://www.arizonasilhouette.com/

I don't turn too many of that particular model because the kit is $16.00 for 1, or $13.20 each in quantaties of 2 to 10. I usually buy 2 at a time - about every 6 months. When I get an exceptional blank, I use it on the finer and more expensive kits.

Looks great. I'd hate to drop those in the swamp or on the blind floor.

Thanks for the links Hank. I had heard of Berea before, but totally forgotten about them. I will have to try one of these at some point. I'm kinda excited about learning as there is a possibility of my office buying a buch of them from me done in "company colors" (grey and red) using some of the color ply type materials as gifts for clients (and employees).

                Again beautiful work.

Very nice. Sometimes I'm not a fan of the Sierra Kits, but, the combination of woods you used is great. The pen has a classic look to it.

The calls look good, too. I want to try some duck calls, but, shop time has been hard to come by lately. I have pens I intended to have finished by Memorial Day that are still waiting to be started.

Very nice pen. Good save. I've got a couple of "mistakes" still sitting around, maybe this will inspire me to come up with a "save" of some kind for them.

                              Hank,

Those are just beautiful. I love the finish.

I presume the high gloss finish will prevent any problems with the wood choices. I remember reading about someone who made an instrument out of some sort of Rosewood [Cocobolo] that made the recipients lips swell up like starlet with too much collagen.
