    Some Pens

I acquired some pen-making materials (kits, blanks, mandrel, barrel trimmer), so I no longer had any excuses about not turning pens! Although there were some miniature tools also included, I didn't get on with them very well. I turned all but one of these using a very sharp 3/4" roughing gouge.

From the top, clockwise, they are:

    5 African Blackwood
    4 Pau Amerello
    4 Bubinga
    2 Zebrano
    3 Padauk
    3 Purpleheart

The outside six are acrylics - what a mess they made when being turned!

    Thanks for looking.

    Ray.

You could say that, Pat! The materials belonged to a former colleague who passed away well before his time. His widow asked me if I could make use of the materials, so I did. Once I got started, it was a bit difficult to stop and I had all these kits and blanks ....

          Very addicting isn't it?.
Did you do those all in the last couple of days?...Oh yeah you're retired.

Very nice. Here I thought I did good making 3 pens and a pencil in the last week.

BTW, made a pencil from soapstone called "wonderstone". Turned out really nice.

              Very nice looking pens, Ray.

It looks like an extended therapy session, though! Like some sort of manic attempt to take Sussex back to the days of the hand-written thank-you note.

Ray: You do nice work. I'll e-mail you for some words of advice in the near future as I'm interested doing a little turning myself.

Very nice looking pens. How hard is it to get started and how much do the pen kits cost. I have been thinking about starting something like this as we have a small lathe and think that it would be fun to do.
