    Drop Spindle

My older sister finally caught on to the fact I have wood lathe. She is BIG into making string and the things you make out of string, otherwise known as knitting. Who am I to judge? I tend to make boards shorter and she tends to make string longer. A hobby is a hobby I guess.

Anyway, she asked me to make a drop spindle. It's used in making yarn from fibers. There's a whole lotta Newton going on there, as far as spindle speed, inertia, angular momentum, etc. I didn't know making string was so complicated.

I figured I'd have a whorl at it. [] (knitting joke)

It's about a foot long total:

No metal hooks or eyes at her request:

Basically a drumstick top to it:

    Thanks for looking,

I wouldn't know where to start making or using one of those things. Looks like you got at least one part of it figured out, in style!

Hopefully she will know what to do with it now.

Nicely done! I love the little inlay-detail near the top. My wife (serious yarn-aholic) took a spinning class, but thankfully I got away with a stick, a hook, some CDs and a couple of rubber bands... She didn't get into the spinning thing though.

          Here it is in use(d)

I sent this off to my sister via mule-train. She finally got it and tried it out. I guess it works..
