Design for a shop built sharpening jig?

Any suggestions for a design or a link to a design for a jig for sharpening turning chisels?

    Thanks in advance.

Here's one link. I'm pretty sure I've seen others on this forum.

Here is a pic of one I ran across. I have not made one yet but I like the use of the bar clamp to give it adjustability.

Funny you should ask. I just spent a good portion of this weekend making one. I got tired of not being able to hand grind a good edge. I've only had time to try it on a couple of bowl gouges, but OMG what a difference. It really makes an amazing difference to have a very sharp tool in your hand. This was time very well spent. I followed these instructions, somewhat.

Here's a link to another approach:

I feel I should learn how to do this free-hand, but after building this jig, that may be a while off in the future.

        Good Luck,

Scotty, wish I would have seen your post a few days ago. That's a great idea using those aluminum clamps. I have a bunch of the HF ones, and I would have used them had I had your smarts.

Does anyone use a 1" belt sander for sharpening tools?

I use a one-inch belt frequently. It does a great job and particularly so with a fine grit belt.

                Dumb Question

Which direction does the wheel spin on a grinder? If I'm looking at the front, does the top spin towards me or away from me?
I really am going to make something one of these days.

The wheel of the grinder comes toward you from the top, down past the item your grinding.

In fact, in the pictures above you can see the arrows above each wheel indicating the direction of travel.

Thanks--it's so obvious after you point it out.

Does anybody sharpen on their lathe? I'm trying to get started, very low budget, and don't think I'm doing it right. Some sort of jig to keep things steady might be just the thing, though.

I have a $25 Chisel Mate from PSI on my Jet Mini. It is handy for quick touch ups. For precise work I go for my slow speed grinder.

I used a combination of two sets of plans. I build the stand from the wtsharpen.pdf and the jigs (vari-grind) from Jean Michel.

jeanmichel.org is no longer accessable but the Quebec woodturners association has made his content available on their site.

                        http://www.atbq.qc.ca/jm/

JM designed some nice stuff but moved on to that big workshop in the sky in May of 2005. The varigrind jig can be printed out, stuck onto the stock and cut from the pattern. It comes out very nice.

It took me a while to find JM's new home before I could post the link to his plans and stuff. Well worth it though, this guy was good...

For the life of me I can't find the link on that page to the drawings for the varigind jig?

                          Thanks for the link though.

                            This should get you there:

It will be the last page on that PDF file.
