    Holm Oak Bowl

I was lucky enough to find a big piece of Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) - sometimes called "Holly Oak" or "Evergreen Oak" - at my favorite supplier and it jumped on the van! After some work with the bandsaw, I had a good size blank to play with. This is the result:

I was so pleased with the result, I've even photographed the underside:

It measures 380mm (15") diameter and is 83mm (3.25") tall. Finish is cellulose sanding sealer, followed by two coats of Danish Oil.

    Thanks for looking.

    Ray.

      Ray,

      That is really lovely.

I remember my mother talking about Holly Oaks in a park we used to go to near Southgate.

              Pretty, pretty, pretty, Ray.
I do like that wood, and the turning and finish are super.

Interesting figure in the wood, nice shape and good looking finish! With that size it should be a quite versatile piece.

Looks great, and the finnish is excellent.

very nice, I have learned that even a very common wood like oak makes for some great turnings because of the rays in the grain.
