    First Stoppers

    Happy Holidays,

I just got in from the shop with these turnings.
I made these for my cousins for Christmas. The
house that my grandmother grew up in was distroyed
during hurricane Katrina. The wood I used came
from the pile of debris that was her house.
I am not sure what kind of wood it is but I think
that it might be heart pine. The house was on
the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Pascagoula, MS and
was built in the 1850's. After turning the shape
that I wanted I sanded with 4 different grits of
sandpaper then finished with light wood Hut Wax.

I got the stoppers and a kit at Woodcraft.
The kit was a joke. By the time that you drilled
the 6mm hole and used the provided mandrel the
turning was too loose on the stopper. So, I cut
the end off of a 1/4" woodscrew and drilled the
hole in the blank with a 7/16" bit and it has
worked like a champ since then.

Very nice work, they are great. I had the same problem with the mandrel not holding in some woods. I resorted to attaching the all thread from the stopper kit to the wood with CA and then turning the stopper in my chuck.

        Very nice indeed.
They're loaded with sentimental value too.
        Good job!
