Happy Holidays,
I just got in from the shop with these turnings.
I made these for my cousins for Christmas. The
house that my grandmother grew up in was distroyed
during hurricane Katrina. The wood I used came
from the pile of debris that was her house.
I am not sure what kind of wood it is but I think
that it might be heart pine. The house was on
the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Pascagoula, MS and
was built in the 1850's. After turning the shape
that I wanted I sanded with 4 different grits of
sandpaper then finished with light wood Hut Wax.
I got the stoppers and a kit at Woodcraft.
The kit was a joke. By the time that you drilled
the 6mm hole and used the provided mandrel the
turning was too loose on the stopper. So, I cut
the end off of a 1/4" woodscrew and drilled the
hole in the blank with a 7/16" bit and it has
worked like a champ since then.
