    Jet mini acting odd

    Would any of you know why my Jet Mini 1014 would start running in reverse? I've had it for approx 2 years and use it for maybe 10 hours a month...

    When I start it now, I have to turn the spindle towards me by hand and hit the switch or it hesitates on start up and it might start the right direction or it will start turning backwards.

    I like the reverse... but I'm thinking that it can't be good for it. Kenneth, you've done a lot of mods on your lathes and have researched them quite a bit... you have any idea what's going on with this?

    Thanx for your input

    sounds like the starter capacitor is bad or the centrifugal switch is stuck.

    An induction motor needs a little help when starting to unbalance it and influence it to start going one direction. This is accompished with a starter capacitor usually located in a bump (~1" x 3"?)
    on the side of the motor housing. It might be ~.1 uFd depending on the size of the motor.

    There's also a centrifugal switch that, once the motor starts spinning, disengages the starter cap from the circuit as it is no longer needed and reduces the efficiency of the motor if left connected.

    So the switch could be stuck in the disconnect position or the cap is bad or the cap si disconnected or the switch open.

      I agree with Loring on this one especially since I experienced it on my Grizzly lathe.

      As a mater of fact I wrote about it when it happened and this may help you;

        Thank you guys. Kenneth, your write up describes my symptoms to a tee. I was doing exactly the same thing. Turning a little walnut bowl, stopped to see if I had the tool marks out, turned back on and the spindle just sort of "jiggled" back and forth and then it started turning backwards.

        I went to woodcraft today to talk to them about it (it's where I purchased said lathe) and the manager called WMH/Jet and described the problem to them. They said it was probably the capacitor (bad windings were mentioned too). No one said anything about the centrifugal switch. Anyway, he said to bring the motor serial number to the store and the manager could order a replacement motor free from Jet (now I'll have a spare... sweeeet)

        I'll take this one apart tomorrow and see if it has the switch.

        Thanks again Loring and Kenneth
