    Detent on miter saw turntable.

Yeah I wanted a 60 degree cut so I chose the 30 degree detent, or at least what I thought was the 30 degree detent. You know 90 - 60 = 30.
I cut 6 pieces, 12 cuts and started gluing up pairs. When I got to the halfway point I put it all together and was shocked by how far off I was.
Protractor says two 60's made a 116.9 degree angle????

I went back and looked at the saw and found there was a line and a miter detent at like 31.6°, not 30 degrees like I assumed.
I am chagrined to say I never knew there was such a thing. Apparently its a standard for cutting crown moldings. Apparently there's a 33.9° point marked on the bevel scale, too.

I feel pretty stupid right now. What started out as three reasonable sized pieces of scrap for an experiment are now much smaller 6 pieces of scrap.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Thanks for the info. I was not aware of those specialty degrees. But it is something I will keep in mind.
