    Reloading sandpaper on WDS1600

I recently purchased a Ryobi WDS1600. I know this is supposed to be similar to the Steel City, Jet and Performax 16-32 units. The difference I am finding is that the clamping mechanism on the motor side seems to be different on all of these units with different instructions for each.

Needless to say, I have had no lick in finding an online manual for the WDS1600 and I'm looking for suggestions/instructions on how to reload the sandpaper. Any help would be appreciated - even if a link to a complete manual!!

    Thanks,
    Scott

Unfortunately not. That is one of the manuals I had looked at. On the Ryobi, the shaft shown in Figure 4c on page 20 doesn't exist.

I have the WDS, too. That Steel City one is really close but as you indicated, it is not the same. The clamp on the WDS near the motor is the same as the one at the cantilevered end.

While standing on the infeed side, you pull the paper as taut as you can with your left hand, you hold the clamp open with your right hand, then slip the paper into the slot in the drum under the clamp and release the clamp. You want to make sure you clamp it with the paper as taut as you can get it because the clamp doesn't pull out any slack like the Jet clamp does.

The clamp sucks, though. Last winter I bought the Jet replacement clamp and some day I plan on installing the clamp on this drum. It might take a little surgery, though.

For the time being, though, I cut a 1" wide piece of Gorilla tape to a little more than the circumference of the drum. When I wrap the paper around, I tape over the end to hold the paper in place. When I run boards through, I avoid that last 1 1/2" of space so I don't run against the tape.

One thing I learned is to make the "skinny" end of the paper nearest the motor about 3/4" longer than the diagram in the manual. Taper it to 1/2". That makes it easier to get the clamp to catch.

I think if you contact Ryobi customer service they can provide you with an electronic copy of the manual. That's what I did for a ML618 lathe.
