    Planer problem

I have the DeWalt 733 planer. Everything seemed to be OK yesterday, but planning trouble free has become a problem today. When I run stock through the planer, the feed rollers seem to stick, giving me black chatter marks on the stock. The rollers are rolling properly without stock being run through the planer. If I "help" the stock through the planer, it seems to work, but I still get a few black marks on the stock. I cleaned the rollers with alcohol, and it seemed to help just a little, but the problem still exists. Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem on my Ryobi planer. The rollers just slipped on the stock. I cleaned the rollers with Xylol and that fixed it. Alcohol is likely not aggressive enough, so try paint thinner, since that will cut pitch/sap.

Thanks for the reply, d. And welcome to the site. The rollers appear to be clean now,but I'll give the mineral spirits a try. I'm hoping it's not a bearing freezing.

Could be that your table just needs waxing.

I had the same problem with my Delta. I cleaned the rollers with an old soft toothbrush and alcohol. It worked for me. But make sure the toothbrush is soft and the bristles are splayed so not to "scar" the rollers. Do NOT use the toothbrush for your teeth after this.

I actually thought about that. We recently moved, and I feel lucky to have found my planer ---- not so lucky with the wax. But I know it's here somewhere. I might have to break down and buy more.

Maybe I was on the right track. Thanks for the post.

Depends on what kind of alcohol you are using......

I stand (or possibly lean against something) corrected. Uncle Jack says you are right.

Any chance the outfeed table got bumped up in the move and has created a bit of a lip as the stock feeds? I reckon i'd check the infeed table as well to make sure i'm not headed downhill on the feed.

                    Just a thought.

The big brother DW735 sometimes collects sawdust in the chains & sprockets that drive the rollers leading to physical damage in those parts. Simply busting a roll pin will cause the rollers to move easily when unloaded but have no real oomph to them when they actually have to push stock through the planer.

With the unit unplugged, look for cover doors that can be removed easily on the sides of the unit - where drive sprockets & chains can attach to the ends of the rollers. Even if there isn't any dust buildup in there you may find those parts could stand some fresh lubrication. The owners manual, or online parts diagrams, might give clues to a) where the drive chains live and b) how to access them.

Thanks for the replies. I had company last night, so didn't do anything with it then. I did feel as though the rollers were pretty clean, so I it got a wax job this morning. Problem solved. Works like a new planer today.

Glad you got it worked out. But I'll add my two cents anyway. If you have to clean your rollers (I use alcohol) you must clean the table and the in-feed and out-feed tables as well and then wax them. Works for me everytime and it happens fairly often since I do use a lot of pine.

Just before I notice that my rollers are not feeding properly I can detect a slight rippling effect in the planed surface, indicating that I have waited too long to clean my rollers.
