I appreciate all you mathy types for making sure the bridges, etc. don't fall. I'll stick to Fine Arts, where someone else's life is rarely in jeopardy. And we don't have to do much more than remember to allow for the ends when framing a 4x8 foot platform.

There's some hoo-hah in one of my stagecraft books about calculating dynamic loading vs. static loading (dancers on platforms vs. plats without dancers). I solve the problem by overbuilding massively.

I use the Veritas guide with the little angle attachment. No math required.

In Engineering overbuilding can work but it gets costly.

Suppose you want to make an airplane to sell. You overbuild and the wings don't ever, ever fall off which is a really good feature. Still the problem is that your airplane weighs a lot, carries half the people and uses twice the fuel as the other guy's airplane which was built just right and its wings don't fall off either. Not to mention your plane costs 25% more.

Your kids are going to starve while you wait for airlines to buy your airplane.
